Snapshot

Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.

The Role

You will contribute to empirical and conceptual research that helps to identify and define appropriate model behavior in context and the societal impacts of AI. You will work closely with Research Engineers to implement research findings and transform them into concrete, measurable metrics, systematic evaluations, and tooling. You will be expected to communicate your findings to a variety of audiences, including publishing work in high impact venues.

Key responsibilities:

  • Identify new research areas and questions
  • Manage and lead a thriving and growing team.
  • Design and conduct research and experiments
  • Develop and test new metrics and measures
  • Perform data analysis to synthesize and visualize research findings and evaluation results
  • Lead writing results for research publications
  • Communicate findings in non-research publications to non-technical audiences through presentations or briefs

About You

You are a Research Scientist who is interested in applying your skills to better understand model behavior in areas with large impacts on people and society. You are passionate about evaluation and quantification and able to communicate well with technical teams to integrate your work into existing platforms and infrastructures.

In order to set you up for success as a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind,  we look for the following skills and experience:

  • A history of high impact research and publication in relevant areas, typically demonstrated by a PhD and/or strong publication record in a relevant field. Because this role is interdisciplinary in nature, a disciplinary background in Computer Science, Economics, Computational Social Science, Data Science, Political Science, or similar involving technical/quantitative skills and consideration of impacts on people or society is desired.
  • Proficiency in programming languages like R or Python (with experience in relevant libraries like Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn) or other scripting languages.
  • Solid understanding of statistical concepts, and ability to perform basic data analysis and visualization
  • Experience with or demonstrated interest in AI evaluation.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills: an ability to effectively communicate and work with researchers from a wide variety of backgrounds in research publications, policy briefs, and/or presentations targeted at both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $166,000 - $244,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
