The Google DeepMind Legal team provides proactive and strategic legal counseling to accelerate Google DeepMind’s best-in-class research, ensure smooth operations and enable fast-paced progress towards our mission. We are looking for an adept and enthusiastic Associate Legal Counsel to work closely with the Google DeepMind researchers and cross-functional teams in order to advise on a variety of legal issues relevant to their work.  You will collaborate closely with Google DeepMind product and research teams, other members of the legal team, compliance teams, and with outside counsel when needed.

The Role

In this role, you will partner closely with teams from across Google DeepMind, to provide legal support, as well as partner with the Legal Operations team to help streamline legal support.

Key responsibilities:

  • Structure, draft and negotiate commercial agreements associated with Google DeepMind’s research, product and operational activities, primarily focusing on licence agreements, services agreements, and collaboration agreements.
  • Collaborate with teams to responsibly partner with vendors, including negotiating any necessary agreements and ensuring robust, scalable compliance frameworks that meet AI model development needs. 
  • Support strategic research efforts by spotting and advising on legal issues and risks.
  • Advise on internal contracting processes and policies, including deal review and approval processes.
  • Support the Legal team’s initiatives to manage and track OKRs, coordinate legal processes, and report on key legal metrics in support of high-level team strategies.
  • Support other key strategic initiatives across the company, such as generative media partnerships.

About You

  • Qualified to practise law in a recognized jurisdiction. Qualification in the UK, US, or another major common or civil law jurisdiction is preferred.
  • You have experience advising globally on a range of commercial matters with a good understanding of intellectual property, data and privacy issues. 
  • You are comfortable making judgement calls on a regular basis, and thoughtful about the real world consequences of those decisions.
  • You have excellent communication skills. 
  • You are adept at balancing legal, cultural and business demands and produce practical, solution-focused advice.
  • You are organized, accustomed to working at a fast pace, and juggling many different business initiatives; and you can quickly pivot with changing business priorities.

In addition, the following would be an advantage: 

  • You have prior experience negotiating AI agreements. 
  • You have a track record of contributions to AI products or systems, and have a balanced view of the opportunities and risks of those AI products or systems.
  • You’re a team player who can operate independently but enjoys being part of a highly supportive and collaborative team.
  • You’re excited about Google DeepMind’s mission and want to help achieve it.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $210,000 - $312,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
