Engineering Manager - Safety Platform

The focus of Safety Platform is to make Discord’s users safer by creating scalable and proactive systems to limit bad actors across the platform. Keeping users safe is an essential contributor to growth at Discord which is why the output of this team is so important. We are looking for a technical, metrics-driven and hands-on Engineering manager to lead this team. This team is the glue that holds Safety features together, building product infra that powers frontend, user-facing features including settings, NUX, block/mute and reports as well as gathering signals for ML models to detect harm and taking interventions to keep Discord safe for everyone.

 

What You'll Be Doing

  • Supporting a team of talented, 8-10 Engineers including a Staff Engineer
  • Owning our in-house, real-time abuse detection platform written in Python and Rust
  • Working with Product, Data Science, and ML to develop reusable services or architectures
  • Building out the signals, datasets, and databases to support our informational needs
  • Expanding and deploying internal APIs to combat abusive content
  • Maintain operations for our infrastructure on Kubernetes
  • Move quickly to respond to the moving target of abuse on Discord

What you should have

  • 5+ years experience building scalable backend or real-time data systems
  • 2+ years experience as an Engineering Manager
  • Experience operating and deploying large-scale distributed systems, including Kubernetes experience.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well cross-functionally
  • Ability to work with others to create pragmatic solutions — and then evolve and generalize them.
  • Confidence to dive deep into the technical details and challenge designs or solutions.

Bonus Points

  • Experience in touching the whole cloud infrastructure stack - from disks to networking to permissions.
  • Experience with data warehouses like Druid, BigQuery, or Redshift
  • Prior experience working in the Safety domain
  • You have a strong moral compass that navigates and motivates you

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $223,000 to $245,500 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include equity, or benefits.
