Manager - Company Operations Accounting
The Manager of Company Operations Accounting will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the Company Operations within the Residential Subsidiaries of Empower Brands, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in financial reporting. This role will oversee the financial management of projects, which includes developing budgets, tracking costs, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. Reporting directly to the Corporate Controller, the Manager of Company Operations Accounting will ensure effective and efficient execution of critical processes relating to accuracy and completeness of information, compliance with US GAAP, and maintaining a strong control environment.
Responsibilities:
- Direct ownership of the month end close process and internal control environment, including independent and proactive management of all finance and accounting aspects related to Company Operations within the Residential brands.
- This includes but is not limited to project accounting, revenue recognition, fixed assets, debt, bad debt reserves, intercompany accounting, receivables, corporate accruals, and other general accounting areas. Includes the independent oversight of preparation and review of journal entries and balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Executes and coordinates activities related to accounting for complex areas. Evaluates specific business transactions for proper accounting treatment and performs research and technical accounting assessments as needed.
- Manage and lead a team of one or more accountants, including but not limited to: hiring activities, ownership of the performance review process and overall supervision to ensure optimal performance and professional growth.
- Partners with business leaders to ensure revenue and costs are recorded accurately. Ensures job cost and revenue is reconciled timely and accurately in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), specifically ASC 606. Prepares and review project billing and revenue recognition, coordinating with project teams and clients to ensure accurate and timely invoicing and revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP.
- Creates and manages financial reports needed in order to review job cost; manages the variance analysis process during the month, quarter, and year-end financial close process. Prepares monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc financial reports for project stakeholders, including project owners, investors, and management, providing insights into project performance and financial metrics.
- Identifies and executes process and technology improvements to increase efficiency and implement best practices while strengthening the internal control environment of the Residential Company Operations at Empower Brands. Evaluates and implements financial software and systems to improve efficiency.
- Independently partners with the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable Managers to ensure accurate recognition of payables and receivables related to company operations within the residential brands. Monitors, traces, and corrects billing errors within company operations.
- Training and development for self and direct reports including providing clear/consistent direction on priorities, improving direct report abilities, maintaining moral, and providing growth/development opportunities.
- Maintaining current accounting policies for the company including researching current and upcoming accounting guidance.
- Coordinates all activities related to external audits, working with auditors to provide necessary documentation and addressing audit findings.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of financial operations.
Must be able to work effectively in a high-growth environment – comfortable in both individual contributor roles and cross-functional team management roles.
Critical Skills & Attributes
- Deep knowledge of US GAAP
- Proven understanding of concepts underlying the theory and proactive of recording, classifying, examining, and analyzing financial transactions.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills; flexible in dealing with change and shift in priorities to consistently meet deadlines
- Excellent analytical skills and strong attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and direct/supervise others
- Ability to work cooperatively with other associates and outside vendors and maintain the highest level of company integrity
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and NetSuite (moderately complex knowledge of Excel)
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting
- 4+ years of experience in project accounting or finance roles, preferably within the real estate development industry or with a Big 4 public accounting firm.
- 2 years management experience
- CPA certification a plus, but not required.
