Job Summary
As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will own and evolve the foundational platform services that power critical business workflows across the client's engineering organization. You will work inside a Platform team supporting hundreds of engineers and leading the design and delivery of high-reliability distributed systems — spanning communications delivery infrastructure (Email, SMS), workflow orchestration, and observability. In this role, you collaborate closely with SRE, DevEx, and product engineering teams to raise the bar on reliability, developer experience, and operational excellence across shared infrastructure. This is a high-ownership role where you shape not just the code but the practices and standards the broader engineering organization builds on.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Design, implement, and maintain shared platform services including Email and SMS delivery pipelines, distributed workflow orchestration, and supporting cloud infrastructure;
- Drive infrastructure modernization efforts — migrating legacy architectures to resilient, observable workflow platforms;
- Instrument services with customer-centric observability (metrics, monitors, dashboards);
- Author and execute implementation plans spanning multiple repositories and teams, defining rollout, rollback, and decommissioning procedures;
- Collaborate with SRE and Infra teams for the initiatives’ goal achievement, platform reliability and operational standards;
- Contribute to cross-team RFC reviews, architecture discussions, and standards that shape how shared services are built;
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools and evaluate LLM-backed internal tooling to reduce toil and improve engineering workflows;
- Create and maintain runbooks, architecture docs, and technical guides — you document as you build;
- Mentor engineers on distributed systems patterns, workflow engine design, and observability best practices.
Essential Skills
- Back-end engineering experience in Go or Ruby, with a polyglot mindset and comfort picking up new languages;
- Hands-on experience with distributed workflow systems such as Temporal, AWS Step Functions, or similar orchestration platforms;
- Experience designing observability pipelines — metrics, monitors, and alerting — using Datadog, CloudWatch, or equivalent;
- Solid understanding of asynchronous messaging patterns (SQS, Kafka, RabbitMQ) and modernization trade-offs;
- Experience with AWS and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), managing queues, compute, and storage resources;
- Demonstrated ability to design safe, gradual rollout strategies using feature flags with well-defined rollback criteria;
- Strong systems thinking — identifying failure modes, analyzing trade-offs, and taking end-to-end ownership of outcomes;
- Excellent written communication for proposals, RFCs, and runbooks; strong bias for measurable outcomes in agile teams.
Highly Desirable Skills
- Experience with Kubernetes service operations, including container orchestration, ingress, and deployment management;
- Familiarity with CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions preferred) and improving build and deployment pipelines;
- Experience building or integrating AI/LLM capabilities into internal tooling or developer workflows;
- Familiarity with LLM proxy infrastructure and AI service reliability patterns;
- Background in communications infrastructure — Email/SMS pipelines, webhook processing, or provider integrations;
- Prior work on on-call tooling, incident response workflows, or SRE practices in high-availability environments;
- Experience with feature management systems (LaunchDarkly, Split, or similar).
