Workday Program Manager
Contract | Contract-to-Hire | Direct Hire • Remote (Central Time preferred)
We are seeking an experienced Workday Program Manager to lead a multi-track Workday implementation currently underway. IT resourcing is solid and a bench of independent subject-matter consultants is already engaged, but the program needs a dedicated business-side leader to own the plan, keep every workstream sequenced, and translate formal program management practice. This is a hands-on, get-it-done role rather than a purely strategic one.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and maintain the overall Workday program: build and manage the roadmap, work plan, individual project plans, sequencing, and resourcing across all active tracks and future initiatives.
- Build and manage the work breakdown structure and cross-track dependencies, keeping consultants, internal teams, and business stakeholders moving in sync.
- Act as the practical, get-it-done program lead — pushing back on the business where needed, while scaling process to match the organization's current maturity level in areas such as job architecture, decentralized business units, and internal Workday skill gaps.
- Identify and escalate risks, blockers, and organizational impasses (e.g., business architecture gaps) rather than attempt to resolve them personally.
- Drive a phased rollout plan, sequencing domestic go-lives ahead of international expansion and accounting for local labor and works council requirements as they arise.
- Coordinate with the Enterprise Program Management Office (EPMO) to use existing templates and governance rather than build new process from scratch.
- Manage remobilization of the systems integrator (SI) once the plan is approved and coordinate any other vendor or resourcing decisions.
- Report progress, timeline, and risk to program sponsorship and business ownership on a regular cadence.
What This Role Owns
- Overall program plan, timeline, and resourcing model.
- Work breakdown structure and dependency management across every track.
- Day-to-day coordination between consultants, internal teams, and the business.
- Risk and issue escalation, including flagging organizational impasses upward.
- Vendor coordination: SI remobilization, EPMO templates and governance.
- Translating between formal PM best practice and what the organization can execute on today.
Adjacent Workstreams (Already Staffed, Not This Role's Responsibility)
- Job architecture design — an independent specialist consultant is already engaged.
- Payroll architecture — an independent payroll architect is already engaged.
- Compensation architecture — an independent compensation consultant is already engaged.
- International HCM — a dedicated international HCM lead is already in place.
- Integration architecture — an internal integration architect owns the technical integration layer.
- Business architecture / org design for consolidation — a known gap being explored separately with an outside consulting partner; explicitly out of scope for this role.
Who You'll Work With
- Program sponsor and executive stakeholder(s), as primary point of contact.
- Independent consultants supporting job architecture, payroll, and compensation.
- Internal integration architect who owns the technical integration layer.
- International HCM lead.
- Enterprise Program Management Office (EPMO), for templates and governance.
- The systems integrator (SI) - currently paused pending remobilization.
- An outside consulting partner supporting the separate business architecture track.
- HR leadership and executive leadership, once a business owner is formally assigned.
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience program-managing a Workday implementation (HCM required; Payroll, Financials, or other modules a plus), ideally across multiple concurrent workstreams.
- Comfort building and maintaining roadmaps, work breakdown structures, and cross-track dependency maps from scratch.
- Strong vendor and SI management experience, including remobilizing paused engagements.
- Ability to operate at the maturity level of the organization — pragmatic, adaptable, and focused on progress over process for its own sake.
- Experience navigating multi-country or multi-entity rollouts, including awareness of international labor requirements, is a plus.
- Excellent stakeholder management and executive communication skills; comfortable escalating organizational risk without personally trying to resolve it.
- PMP, Workday certification, or equivalent program management credential preferred but not required.
Logistics
- Contract type: open to long-term contract, contract-to-hire, or direct placement.
- Location: remote acceptable; Central Time zone preferred.
- Compensation: competitive, commensurate with experience; contract rate or salary plus bonus and benefits depending on engagement type.
