ROLE OVERVIEW
As the Manager, Technical Design, you will lead a team of designers and partner with production to ensure that all products are consistent with brand standards and seasonal design concepts for specific classifications. You will leverage your advanced skills in garment grading|specifications, fit and construction, fabrics, sewing operations, and pattern making to lead your team in fulfilling these objectives. You will be the liaison between teams and departments ensuring smooth and positive interactions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Continually research competition in the market for various construction techniques, new technology, and fit
- Stay current on industry innovations in rapid prototyping and sampling including but not limited to 3D prototyping and rendering
- Allocate and Assembly of tech packs from development stages through production
- Work closely with Design, Buying, and Product Development teams and be the liaison with the head of production as well as import and domestic vendors
- Facilitate sampling process of apparel styles from design concept; first prototype to a final, production-ready sample offering solutions to correct fit and construction details for challenging styles when needed
- Manage preparation of matrices for handover to production
- Lead the creation of block pattern library to maintain fit consistency within product categories
- Act as point of contact for vendors, cascading calendar deadlines and expectations
- Identify and alert design and production teams of potential production, quality and costing issues and make recommendations to ensure brand integrity is maintained
- Implement and reassess the quality control process in distribution center
- Oversee team of technical designers and quality control team to ensure they are supported in their roles
- Oversee and manage team’s fittings, ensuring on time communication with vendors
- Oversee team’s daily correspondence with import factories, sending and tracking comments and follow up on prototypes when needed, ensuring calendar deadlines are met
- Manage and support tech team with fit process, fitting illustrating pattern corrections and style comments using Excel, Illustrator, and Photoshop
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Seven plus years in the apparel industry as a Technical Designer managing a team
- Understanding in apparel design, garment measuring, garment construction, development process (INCEPTION THROUGH PRODUCTION), and quality control|assurance
- Proficient knowledge and skill in fit, pattern making, grading, production friendly construction methods, and technical drawing
- Experience in grading and ability to understand grade rules on women, plus, and men’s categories
- Knowledge in leading live fittings and evaluating the overall fit - Ability to make accurate fit corrections to achieve the desired style
- Expertise of preparing and writing product specification sheets across all company categories
- Provide clear direction of fit corrections to send to the factory on a regular basis
- Elevated computer skills, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Office, and G-Suite
- Ability to identify apparel flaws quickly and effectively and|or possible production issues
- Ability to effectively influence and convey necessary corrections
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, adapt with rapidly changing priorities, and balance short-term needs with long-term strategic initiatives
- Ability to work in a productive and effective manner in a fast-paced environment
- Strong writing, grammatical and proofreading skills with an elevated level of creativity
- Detail-oriented, organized, and dependable
- BA|BS degree
- English, additional language(s) an advantage
- Schedule of this position: Monday – Friday | Core business hours | Onsite
