Data Engineering Manager
Frontera is reimagining how children with autism and other behavioral health needs get the care they deserve. We bring together world-class clinicians, technologists, and autism specialists to build cutting-edge AI tools that help care teams work smarter and spend more time with the children and families who need them most.
Our platform is HIPAA-compliant and designed for the real-world needs of behavioral health teams - from psychologists to ABA therapists. By combining evidence-based care with powerful technology, we’re expanding access to high-quality services for families everywhere.
Our Mission
Frontera exists to close the care gap: every child, no matter where they live, should be able to access effective behavioral healthcare.
The Role
We’re looking for a Data Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for Frontera’s foundational data model—the core system that connects product, ML, analytics, and clinical workflows.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role: you’ll drive architecture, design, and implementation of data systems while managing a small but high-impact team. You’ll set the direction for how Frontera ingests, stores, and serves multimodal data—especially video and audio—while ensuring reliability, security, and scalability.
You’ll work closely with engineering, ML research, and product leaders to build a unified data layer that enables faster innovation across the company.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & Ownership
- Lead a team of data engineers building and maintaining Frontera’s foundational data model and ingestion pipelines.
- Drive technical design and implementation for complex data initiatives, setting the example through direct contributions.
- Define the roadmap, priorities, and technical standards for data systems aligned with company objectives.
- Mentor and elevate the existing team by leading through hands-on execution and high-quality design practices.
- Foster a culture of reliability, collaboration, and continuous learning across engineering teams.
Technical Strategy & Architecture
- Own the architecture and evolution of Frontera’s core data model, ensuring interoperability across ML, analytics, and product systems.
- Design scalable pipelines that handle video, audio, text, and structured clinical data, ensuring observability and strong data contracts.
- Establish schema governance and versioning strategies that support autonomy while preserving global consistency.
- Partner with ML research teams to operationalize data for model training, evaluation, and inference.
- Collaborate with the application engineering team to power downstream APIs and external integrations.
- Lead architectural efforts for media ingestion, event segmentation, video storage optimization, and metadata indexing.
Data Quality, Governance & Compliance
- Implement robust observability—monitoring, alerting, and data quality metrics across all pipelines.
- Build processes for schema reviews, documentation, and cross-team data model alignment.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA and SOC 2 standards through secure pipeline design, encryption, and access control.
- Design scalable access patterns for analytics, insights, and ML workflows.
Qualifications:
- 8+ years of experience in data or backend engineering, with at least 2+ years in a lead or management capacity.
- Proven success designing and implementing large-scale data architectures supporting multiple domains.
- Strong hands-on experience with data modeling, ETL/ELT, and schema design for structured and unstructured data.
- Proficiency in Python and SQL; familiarity with Airflow, Spark, Kafka, dbt, or equivalent frameworks.
- Expertise with cloud-native data systems (AWS or GCP: S3, Redshift, BigQuery, Pub/Sub, etc.).
- Experience designing and operating video or media data pipelines, including encoding and indexing.
- Familiarity with API development and secure data exchange patterns.
- Understanding of compliance frameworks such as HIPAA, GDPR, or SOC 2.
- Experience implementing observability and operational excellence practices for data infrastructure.
Bonus Points
- Background in healthcare, behavioral science, or other regulated data environments.
- Experience supporting ML workflows or feature stores.
- Exposure to metadata management or lineage tooling.
- Interest in scaling a data team and evolving foundational data systems in a fast-moving environment
