Location: Remote (U.S. based; must be available to work PST hours)

Background Check Requirement

As part of our hiring process, Frontline Wildfire Defense conducts comprehensive background checks for all new hires. These checks typically cover the past 7–10 years and may include employment and education verification. For roles that require work in the field, driving record verification is also required. Employment offers are contingent upon the successful completion of these background checks.

About Frontline Wildfire Defense

Founded in 2017 by landscape ecologist and fire mitigation expert Harry Statter, Frontline developed the first fully integrated wildfire defense system to stop the leading cause of home loss in wildfires: ember-driven ignition. The system combines exterior sprinklers, full-coverage design, and connected software for remote monitoring and response, allowing homes to protect themselves long after families evacuate or infrastructure fails.

Proven effective during the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, 96% of homes with Frontline systems survived. That success has earned top industry recognition, including Frontline being recognized as one of TIME’s Best Inventions 2025 in the Green Tech category and receiving the PCBC Gold Nugget Award for “Most Innovative Housing Concept” and the Best of IBS Award for “Best Home Technology.”

As wildfires grow hotter and more frequent, our vision is to give people the tools and strategies to live safely with fire. We’re building a mission-driven team creating real-world solutions in wildfire safety and climate tech.

About This Opportunity

As a Contracts Attorney, you will be Frontline’s dedicated commercial legal resource, owning the agreements that govern how we work with general contractors, vendors, and strategic partners. Reporting to our General Counsel and partnering closely with our Legal Team, you will be the first line of legal judgment on the majority of agreements moving through our business.

Frontline sits at the intersection of construction project delivery, hardware manufacturing and procurement, and SaaS-enabled monitoring services. That means real variety in your day: a general contractor subcontract negotiation one morning, a vendor MSA the next, a marketing review after that.

This is a high-autonomy role for an attorney who wants to practice commercially - giving fast, clear, business-aligned guidance rather than issue-spotting from a distance - and who wants to build the legal infrastructure of a climate tech company at exactly the moment it is scaling.

Key Responsibilities

General Contractor & Subcontract Negotiation

  • Own GC agreement negotiation - Serve as primary owner for general contractor contract redlines, change orders, amendments, and supporting paperwork from first draft through execution.
  • Negotiate installer subcontract amendments - Take primary responsibility for amendments to installer master subcontracts, ensuring changes preserve our risk position as scope evolves.
  • Support the subcontracting engine - Act as the legal escalation and secondary reviewer on installer master subcontract creation and redlining, statements of work, SOW change orders, and time-and-materials agreements.
  • Structure construction risk deliberately - Advise on indemnity, insurance and additional insured requirements, waivers of subrogation, lien rights, retainage, liquidated damages, and flow-down provisions.

Vendor, Partnership & Commercial Agreements

  • Own vendor agreements - Draft, review, and negotiate vendor and procurement agreements across hardware, software, and services.
  • Review external NDAs - Serve as primary reviewer for partner and vendor NDAs presented on their paper, and support the General Counsel on strategic partnership agreements.
  • Review marketing materials- Partner with Marketing to review campaigns and website content for legal and regulatory exposure.
  • Manage collection matters - Partner with Finance on commercial collection issues.

Advisory, Escalation & Risk

  • Be the escalation point for the contracts team - Provide fast, practical answers to the Contracts Manager, Contracts Administrator, and Legal Operations Coordinator on direct-client and owner agreements.
  • Back up the General Counsel - Provide support on privacy, regulatory compliance, litigation, employment, and finance-related matters as capacity and expertise allow.
  • Balance risk against velocity - Distinguish material risk from theoretical risk and give clear guidance that lets Sales and Operations move.
  • Partner cross-functionally - Work directly with Sales, Construction Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, and Marketing to translate contract terms into operational reality.

Templates, Playbooks & Scalability

  • Build the clause library - Develop and maintain contract templates, fallback positions, and negotiation playbooks that let the team resolve routine issues without legal review.
  • Raise the team’s ceiling - Train and mentor the Contracts Administrator and Legal Operations Coordinator so more work can be handled at the right level.
  • Improve the system - Identify bottlenecks in contract workflow and drive changes that reduce cycle time without increasing risk.
  • Support compliance programs - Partner with Legal and Operations on licensing, permitting, insurance, and regulatory compliance initiatives.

Qualifications

Must-Have:

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Active license and good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • 5+ years of contract-focused in-house construction legal experience
  • Demonstrated ability to independently redline and negotiate construction subcontracts, MSAs, SOWs, and change orders
  • Strong command of construction risk allocation: indemnity, insurance, additional insured status, liens, retainage, and flow-down terms
  • Experience negotiating vendor, procurement, and commercial agreements
  • Sound commercial judgment - able to give a clear recommendation, not just a list of risks
  • Excellent drafting and written communication
  • Comfortable building process where little exists and operating with limited infrastructure
  • Able to manage a high-volume queue across multiple counterparties and business units in a fast-paced environment

Nice-to-Have

  • In-house experience at a high-growth, venture-backed, or scaling company
  • Licensed in California, Colorado, Washington, or Wyoming, or willing to pursue registered in-house counsel status
  • Familiarity with SaaS agreements, hardware procurement, or hybrid hardware-plus-software business models
  • Experience with consumer- or homeowner-facing contracting and related consumer protection considerations
  • Experience implementing or managing contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems
  • Familiarity with multi-state construction compliance or contractor licensing frameworks
  • Experience supporting finance, audit, or due diligence processes (fundraising, M&A, etc.)
  • Experience utilizing ServiceTitan and Sage Intacct, with a demonstrated track record of implementing new software systems

 Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary: $130,000 - $160,000 DOE
  • Company-provided cell phone and laptop
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Flexible time off + 14 paid holidays (yes, your birthday is one of them!)
  • Work-from-home stipend to support your remote setup
  • Remote-first work environment, fostering work-life balance and autonomy
  • Company-provided equipment
  • Join a high-performing, mission-driven team doing work that truly matters
  •  And much more!

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
