Enrichment Plant Process Engineer

General Matter is seeking a Nuclear Enrichment Plant Process Engineer to lead the conceptual architecture, layout, and design of complex process systems for uranium enrichment facilities. This role focuses on the design and integration of high-reliability process systems supporting advanced nuclear energy production. The ideal candidate combines strong process engineering fundamentals with the ability to architect large-scale systems, ensuring safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance in complex industrial environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Own process system design from concept through detailed development, including process flows, P&ID diagrams, and system-level design documents for UF₆ enrichment systems.
  • Collaborate on conceptual and detailed engineering for vacuum systems, compressors, heat exchangers, and other critical components in enrichment plants.
  • Provide technical leadership in process safety, nuclear safety, and high-hazard system design.
  • Support process modeling, simulation, and optimization for enrichment operations.
  • Prepare and present engineering documentation, including design requirements, specifications, and operational procedures.
  • Participate in technical design reviews, offering insights on system integration and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams—mechanical, chemical, nuclear engineers, operations, and external partners—to ensure cohesive system architecture.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees (MS, PhD) may substitute for experience.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and process control.
  • Demonstrated experience with P&ID development and system-level engineering design.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, balancing technical rigor with practical constraints.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in nuclear fuel cycle operations or uranium enrichment facilities.
  • Familiarity with UF₆ handling and enrichment processes, including safety and regulatory considerations.
  • Experience in architecting large-scale process systems for nuclear or chemical facilities.
  • Proficiency with process modeling tools and simulation software.
  • Prior involvement in conceptual design phases for enrichment or similar facilities.
  • Knowledge of vacuum systems, cryogenics, compressible flow, and advanced chemical processing.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
