An overview of this role
The Create:Code Creations team builds and maintains GitLab's AI-powered code suggestion tools that help developers create and maintain code more efficiently. Our team has successfully launched Code Suggestions, which provides AI-assisted code completions directly in multiple IDEs, and we're now expanding our capabilities to provide even more intelligent assistance through enhanced context awareness and integration across GitLab's product suite.
As a Senior Engineer, you'll work on sophisticated systems that analyze codebases to provide relevant context to large language models, allowing us to generate higher quality code suggestions. You'll help build and scale services that power features from inline code completions to code explanation and test generation, while ensuring our solutions maintain high performance for our global user base.
Some examples of our projects:
- Expanding our context-aware AI systems to improve code suggestion quality
- Building new services to analyze and index repository content for better AI understanding
- Integrating our code creation capabilities with GitLab Duo Chat and other GitLab products
- Developing enterprise-grade controls for AI-powered features
What You’ll Do
- Design and implement systems that analyze codebases to provide relevant context to AI models
- Build and maintain high-performance APIs that power IDE extensions and chat-based code assistance
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate code creation capabilities across GitLab products
- Optimize system performance and response times for our global user base
- Contribute to our context expansion initiatives, including work with imports and dependency files
- Help define and implement enterprise controls for AI-powered features
- Mentor team members and contribute to technical decision-making
- Participate in code reviews and documentation efforts
What You’ll Bring
- Strong experience with Ruby and Python development and AI-related technologies
- Proven track record building and maintaining production REST APIs
- Experience with distributed systems and performance optimization
- Expertise with software testing and test automation
- Strong background in version control (Git) and CI/CD practices
- Experience working with databases and data storage systems
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for remote collaboration
About the team
The Code Creation team is at the forefront of GitLab's AI initiatives, focusing on helping developers create and maintain code more efficiently. We've successfully launched our Code Suggestions feature and are now working on expanding its capabilities through better context awareness and integration across GitLab's product suite. Our team collaborates globally across multiple time zones, working with various groups from IDE Extension teams to AI Framework and ModelOps teams. We maintain a balance between shipping new features and ensuring high performance and reliability for our global user base. The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently for residents of listed locations only. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, and alignment with market data. See more information on our benefits and equity. Sales roles are also eligible for incentive pay targeted at up to 100% of the offered base salary.

$117,600 - $252,000 USD
