Thermal Development Engineer

 

Job Summary  

As a Thermal Development Engineer, you will be working closely with the hardware and package development teams to develop cooling solutions for Graphcore’s integrated circuits, printed circuit boards and server blade components. 

You will simulate the thermal behaviour of stacked die integrated circuits, thermal interface materials, PCBs and liquid cooled cold plates. 

 

What you’ll be doing 

Graphcore’s Hardware Engineering Team creates both products for sale in volume production and hardware test & validation systems based on Graphcore’s IPU processor. These systems allow Graphcore’s customers to develop leading-edge machine-learning solutions for training and inference. 

  • development of thermal models from silicon dies to liquid coolant 
  • design of experiments to simulate different thermal solutions 
  • optimise thermal performance 
  • selection of materials 
  • collaboration with cold plate vendors 
  • collaboration with server blade and rack mechanical and thermal engineers 
  • Assist with development air cooled solutions for lab fixtures 
  • Investigate Joule PCB heating

Essential  

  • Strong experience in development of thermal models for cooling of electronic products 
  • Good understanding of thermal behaviour of electronic components 
  • Good knowledge and understanding of thermo-mechanical effects of heating on warpage and stress in electronic systems 
  • proficiency in optimising computational fluid dynamics software and compute farms 
  • Strong written and oral communications, team-working and interpersonal skills 
  • A self-starter able to work independently

  • High Performance Liquid-Cooled Compute servers 
  • FlowTherm 
  • Creo 
  • Ansys IcePak
