About the Role:
As a Senior Staff Engineer on the HR Apps team, you’ll help create technical strategy and execution across our suite of products. You’ll bring deep experience in building world class experiences, strong mentorship skills, and ability to think holistically about the systems we own. We’re entering a period of high growth on the team, and there’s huge potential here for you to have a big impact on Gusto’s customers - helping them build, manage and grow their teams!
About the Team:
The HR Apps team is tight-knit and has a great culture of problem solving, quick iteration and building creative solutions. We prioritize building the right experience for our customers - helping them accomplish their goals when it comes to their teams, while staying compliant with relevant rules and laws (it’s more fun than it sounds). We love working cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data Science, Partnerships and Support to make what we’re building as impactful as possible.
Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
- Identify and solve high-impact problems involving a level of technical and/or organization complexity that requires understanding and coordination across multiple domains.
- Consistently show up as an organizational leader, within HR Apps and beyond.
- Work with engineers and others across team and organizational boundaries to elevate Gusto’s engineering quality and velocity.
- Inform and maintain best practices for reliability and observability for the team.
- Communicate and negotiate the organizational investment for the creation or expansion of our systems and services.
- Find, explore and coordinate engineering-wide improvements to core data models and other foundational architecture.
Here’s what we're looking for:
- 15+ years of professional software development experience
- Experience in scaling engineering organizations with the focus on individual and team development
- Experience building and maintaining resilient backend systems to support customer-facing products.
- Experience in highly cross-functional environments for highly complex products
- Experience as tech lead, overseeing projects across multiple teams
- Ability to communicate technical complexity and help facilitate informed tradeoffs
- Enthusiasm for a collaborative, test-driven environment
- Able to build maintainable, structured, well-documented code
Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $191,000/yr to $237,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $225,000/yr to $279,000/yr for San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Please note that travel to Gusto's Denver office for onboarding is required for this position. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please share with your recruiter.
Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.
Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.
