About Us
Harlem Grown’s mission is to inspire youth to live healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition.
Harlem Grown operates 13 urban agricultural sites featuring 5 soil-based urban farms, 4 school gardens, 3 hydroponic greenhouses, and a mushroom chamber. All of our sites are located between 122 and 152 Streets in Central Harlem, Manhattan.
Since 2021, our programming has served over 10,000 youth in Harlem, we've produced and distributed over 100,000 servings of food, and diverted over 50,000 pounds of food scraps into local compost operations.
Our Programs
Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability through the lens of racial justice, food justice, social justice, and equity. Our youth focused programs include intensive school partnerships, educational farm tours, a summer camp, a Saturday enrichment program, monthly community events, an afterschool program, and our Mobile Teaching Kitchen. Our community development programs open to all ages include wellness workshops, special events, food scrap collection for composting, and fresh produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents.
Job Overview
The part-time Educator seasonal role is responsible for leading engaging and hands-on education programs focused on food and farming across Harlem Grown’s farm sites on Saturdays (April- October). This role involves facilitating hands on activities related to science and sustainable agricultural practices, teaching food and nutrition education, and cooking classes to diverse audiences, including youth, seniors, and community members. This part-time Educator will work alongside the Saturday team, and report to the Education Program Manager. This position requires strong teaching, communication, and organizational skills, along with a passion for food justice and community engagement.
Responsibilities
- Teach and/or co-teach engaging, age-appropriate programs for children (all ages) and their families during Saturday programming at our 134th and 127th Street Farms
- Collaborate with program team for program development and execution
- Facilitate accessible, and culturally responsive lessons and recipes to demo at Harlem Grown Saturday programming
- Develop project-based lessons/activities for students to engage in during programming
- Prepare program supplies and cooking materials throughout the week to ensure smooth execution of Saturday programming
- Keep an up-to-date inventory of all Saturday program supplies
- Additional hours may be granted to deliver programming in our afterschool sites, partner schools, and community-based organizations
Basic Qualifications:
- HS Diploma
- 1-2 years' experience conducting food and/or farm education with children
- 1-2 years' experience working in an afterschool, in-school, or outdoor setting
- Strong organizational, planning, and leadership skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Schedule:
Total Hours/Week: 10-15
- Saturdays: 9am-5pm
- Flexible Weekday prep: 3-5 hours

Compensation Range
$25 - $25 USD
