EHS Specialist I
Location: This opportunity will be based in our Norwood, MA manufacturing facility, with additional responsibility supporting our Norton, MA cold and dry goods warehouse.
Pay Range: $75,000.00- $85,000.00 (Based on experience)
Schedule: This is an on-site position supporting a 24/7 food manufacturing and warehouse operations and requires flexibility to respond to off-shift issues and emergency situations as needed.
OVERVIEW OF ROLE:
The EHS Specialist I supports the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of environmental and occupational health and safety for a food manufacturing facility, including responsibilities related to OSHA and EPA regulatory compliance, employee training, incident prevention, and emergency response. This role partners with operations, maintenance, quality, sanitation, and engineering to help maintain a safe, compliant, and audit-ready workplace.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support site EHS programs and daily compliance activities, including hazard recognition, inspections, observations, and follow-up on corrective actions.
- Assist with implementation and maintenance of OSHA safety programs such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hot work, fall protection, contractor safety, hearing conservation, hazard communication, machine guarding, safe work practices, and other applicable safety standards.
- Assist the Process Safety Engineer with compliance activities related to OSHA Process Safety Management and EPA Risk Management Program requirements for covered ammonia refrigeration systems, as applicable.
- Participate in emergency response planning, drills, and incident response as a member of the site emergency response team, including availability for on-call support as required.
- Deliver and coordinate EHS training for employees, contractors, and visitors; maintain training records and support administration of learning management tools such as Alchemy.
- Conduct routine EHS inspections, audits, sampling, and monitoring activities, including stormwater, hazardous & non-hazardous waste, air emissions, noise, cold and heat stress, and other indoor air quality (IAQ) issues, and other permit or compliance-related requirements.
- Investigate injuries, near misses, spills, releases, and other incidents; document findings, attend root causes meetings, and help drive timely corrective and preventive actions.
- Analyze EHS performance data and trends to support risk reduction, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement engineering and administrative controls that reduce risk to employees, food safety, and facility operations.
- Support internal audits, third-party audits, customer audits, and regulatory inspections; help prepare records, respond to findings, and track closure of action items.
- Maintain accurate EHS documentation, permits, logs, reports, and records in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Partner with quality and operations teams to support compliance with food manufacturing requirements, including GMPs, HACCP, SQF, and related customer or regulatory expectations.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Associate’s degree in environmental health and safety, occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience, such as military experience in an EHS related job field will also be considered.
- Minimum of 1 to 3 years of EHS experience in manufacturing, food manufacturing, cold storage, industrial refrigeration, or a similarly regulated industrial environment preferred.
- A fundamental working knowledge of OSHA general industry and EPA regulations is
- Knowledge of ammonia refrigeration safety, OSHA Process Safety Management, EPA Risk Management Programs is a plus.
- Familiarity with GMPs, HACCP, SQF, or other food safety and quality systems in a food manufacturing environment is required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively across functions are required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including MS Teams and the ability to maintain records, analyze data, and prepare reports are required.
- First Aid/CPR/AED and/or HAZWOPER safety training is a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENT:
- Must be able to work in manufacturing, warehouse, utility, and refrigeration machine room environments with exposure to cold, heat, humidity, noise, and wet conditions.
- Must be able to walk the production floor, stand for extended periods, climb ladders and stairs, and access elevated or confined areas as needed.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety shoes, eye and hearing protection, hard hat, gloves, as applicable.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds and perform routine inspection, monitoring, and sampling activities throughout the facility.
- Company-provided PPE must be worn in designated production and operational areas.
- Must be able to serve in an on-call capacity and respond to off-hours plant or ammonia refrigeration emergencies as required.
