SR. PROJECT ENGINEER
The primary purpose of this position is to perform project engineering activities including the design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and start-up of new processing equipment across Hydrite facilities. Also shall be capable of supporting plant operations by improving existing production processes and introducing new production processes when required due to project scope.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Lead and support Hydrite’s Safety Vision, Mission, and Values, promoting safety across all operations, including contractor work, to improve facility and company-wide safety performance.
- Perform project-engineering activities encompassing design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and start-up of new processing equipment or systems, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Continuously evaluate, recommend, and implement process and operating procedure improvements to optimize plant performance.
- Apply project-management skills to define schedules, conduct review meetings, document meeting minutes, track project financials, and maintain accurate project documentation.
- Support production of high-quality products that meet or exceed customer expectations, including participation in audits and investigations.
- Provide engineering support to Corporate SQRA and Site EHS representatives to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and standards (OSHA Construction & General Industry, OSHA PSM, RMP, RCRA, DNR, EPA, Title V/PSD, OCPSF, Dept. of Commerce, NFPA, NEC).
- Coordinate and lead process hazard analyses, including level selection, checklist/template completion, and MOC action items for new products/processes; gather necessary data such as mass & energy balances, process kinetics, equipment lists, P&IDs, and relief vent sizing calculations per OSHA PSM requirements.
- Lead engineering efforts to support Food Safety and SQF initiatives and projects.
- Provide technical support to Sales and Marketing teams and interface with customers as needed.
- Uphold Hydrite’s Standard of Excellence by maintaining quality facilities, products, and services for internal and external customers.
- Develop operating procedures, training materials, and technical guidance for new equipment and processes.
- Assist in mentoring and leading process/project engineers, co-ops, and interns.
- Support maintenance of plant equipment as a technical resource.
- Facilitate effective communication across Hydrite departments to ensure branch team success and provide timely, concise, and accurate reports to plant and senior management, including weekly written status updates.
- Perform process-engineering activities such as chemical process design, equipment and engineering specification development, P&ID creation, and control strategy development.
- Assist in project schedule, budget, and scope management; coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, and stakeholders; review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contracts; monitor construction progress; and ensure safety, quality, and regulatory compliance during site visits.
- Support procurement activities, including material take-offs, vendor coordination, and management of RFIs, submittals, change orders, and punch lists.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve issues, maintain project momentum, and meet or exceed KPIs established in yearly performance goals.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
- This position reports to the Corporate Engineering Manager.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- A Bachelor’s degree is required; preferably in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
- Prefer to have additional education in Project Management.
- Minimum ten years of Process-Engineering and/or Project Engineering experience in chemical-processing industry preferred.
- Minimum of five years of direct technical management experience (interfacing with contractors).
- Strong computer skills and knowledge of Power Point, Word, and Excel required. Proficiency in AutoCAD and pipeline-sizing programs preferred.
- Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to read, write, and speak English.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit and/or stand up to 12 hours per day.
- Ability to climb ladders and stairways up to 40 feet in height on an occasional basis.
- Must have valid driver’s license and own a personal vehicle
- Ability to travel overnight, by car and/or plane as needed, between 25% to 50% of the time, for the execution of projects.
- Occasional 12-to-14-hour workdays may be required as a result of travel or project related activities.
- Occasional turning, twisting, stooping, bending, and reaching
- Due to safety concerns, the wearing of contact lenses is prohibited.
- Working from the corporate office 4 days a week when not at other Hydrite facility performing project work.
