QA Director

We're looking for a QA Director to join our team at Hypixel Studios, which collaborates remotely from around the world. Our members range from industry newcomers to experts with 25+ years of experience. Team members come from a diverse set of backgrounds, but share a common passion for building polished player-focused, community-powered games.

As QA Director, you will be responsible for guiding the team towards shipping our products with a focus on building sustainable systems and mechanisms to ensure quality and stability across the Hytale experience. You will design, implement, and continuously evolve a robust test strategy to meet quality benchmarks across all areas of the project, ensuring effective test processes and reporting. One of your primary responsibilities will be to hire, mentor, and develop QA team members, fostering long-term growth and expertise within the department that is up to the challenges of large-scale games while preserving team and individual health.

 

We are seeking someone who will consistently work to balance the needs of the studio, game, and players with the capacity and health of the QA department, by ensuring that quality standards reflect player needs and expectations, and maintaining a player-first approach in all QA processes.



Who you are:

  • You have experience in the creation, delivery and maintenance of testing methodologies across multiple projects and teams.
  • You have management experience with a view to mentorship, improvement and training. Your team is at the heart of what you do day-to-day.
  • You are able to balance the studio, game and player needs vs. the realistic capacity of the team, and/or being comfortable negotiating and conveying expectations based on that pursuit of balance.
  • You bring with you a wealth of QA knowledge and experience, alongside an understanding as to how to best utilize it in different situations.
  • You coordinate and set expectations for internal teams, external partners, and remote developers involved in all QA, QC, and test activities.
  • You foster and maintain a culture of quality throughout the studio, ensuring it is embedded in every stage of development.

 

Some of your role:

  • You foster an environment of embedded QA within our development teams.
  • You are accountable for the framework for creation and delivery of test cases by the QA team and the reporting to production leads.
  • You line manage seasoned QA members and are responsible for the discipline at the project leadership level.
  • Assess and vet any and all applications for QA roles and liaise with recruitment on job postings and the needs of the team as a whole. 
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to set the strategic direction for quality goals and ensure they align with overall studio objectives.
  • You review testing bandwidth with a view to managing the testing team’s size and scope with a view to recruitment.
  • Manage staffing plans, budgets, and resource allocation to ensure the team has the capacity and tools needed to deliver quality outcomes.

 

Essential Traits: 

  • You have a minimum of 5 years experience managing a QA team.
  • You have experience administering and overseeing bug tracking and test management tools, as well as an understanding of how they integrate with production management tools.
  • You have an understanding of the importance and the maintenance of all forms of testing within the development cycle of games (manual test cases and plans, developing test suites, cases, estimations, and reports on durations).
  • You are adaptable to new challenges and changing timelines. You are able to balance studio, game and player needs vs. the realistic capacity of the team.

 

Bonus Traits: 

  • Automation testing setup and execution.
  • Experience with the following but not limited to: JIRA, Notion, GSuite tools (Google Docs, Calendar etc.).
  • Experience integrating QA into Agile software development teams.
  • 5+ years as a member of a AAA game team.
  • ISTQB certified or have similar certifications/training.
