Rockefeller, Jr., International House is a self-supporting, not-for-profit, residential, and community-oriented facility located at the foothills of the University of California Berkeley Campus. Since its founding, International House has housed more than 95,000 residents including two Governors of California, eight Nobel Prize laureates, civil rights, and free speech advocates, ambassadors, business leaders, and royalty…just to name a few.

POSITION OVERVIEW
You will be part of a team that is integral to the overall Resident Experience and that directly supports International House in achieving its mission.
The Resident Life and Intercultural Development Office (RIO) team plans and executes a 12-month residential program that aims at increasing cultural intelligence (CQ), and intercultural leadership skills within the resident and I-House communities.
The Assistant Director of Resident Engagement leads the development and execution of resident programs to foster an inclusive and engaged I-House community. This role uses data-driven approaches to measure impact, track engagement, and continuously enhance resident experiences. This position supervises professional staff and student leaders, provides training and guidance, and plays a strategic role in shaping the residents' experience. Evening and weekend hours are required as part of event and program support.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Resident Engagement & Programming – 30%
- Design, execute, and evaluate 100+ annual events (cultural, educational, and social) that drive cross-cultural learning and resident connection.
- Facilitate resident workshops and intercultural training sessions to develop leadership, teamwork, and cultural intelligence.
- Use data-driven tools (attendance tracking, surveys, and participation metrics) to assess program impact and make continuous improvements.
- Lead signature I-House events such as Sunday Suppers, Speaker Series, Resident Retreat, the International Culture Festival, and other high impact initiatives.
- Supervise Programs Coordinator and Program Operations Coordinator to ensure efficient event execution, logistics, and budgeting.
Strategic Partnerships & Budget Management – 25%
- Cross-collaborate with internal stakeholders to align engagement initiatives with resident support.
- Build relationships with campus departments, community organizations, and alumni to enhance programming.
- Managing annual programming budgets, making data-informed decisions to maximize impact.
Resident Research, Assessment & Evaluation – 25%
- Develop systems to track, analyze, and report resident engagement data, event attendance, and satisfaction metrics.
- Identify trends and provide actionable recommendations to improve resident experiences and communications strategies.
- Present data-driven insights and recommendations related to improving programming and resident experience.
Leadership Advising, Training and Supervision – 20%
- Supervise, mentor, and coach professional staff, part-time staff, and student leads.
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and training for staff and resident leaders as needed.
- Lead or co-facilitate leadership workshops, retreats, and training modules to support resident leadership and community-building initiatives.
- Set measurable goals, provide regular feedback, and monitor performance outcomes for the team.
- Create, organize and maintain relevant policies, resources and guidelines for the department
- Supervise and manage the I-House Resident Council and other resident leadership initiatives.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Expertise in program development, strategic planning, and project management.
- Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong storytelling and presentation abilities.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and project management tools (e.g., Asana).
- Proficiency with digital platforms: Mailchimp, Eventbrite, Canva.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and present data to inform decision-making.
- Creativity and innovation in engagement strategies.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 4–6 years of experience in program management, communications, student affairs, or related fields.
- Demonstrated ability to use data and analytics to track engagement and evaluate program effectiveness.
- Supervisory experience, particularly with diverse teams and large-scale events.
- Experience in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Leadership Development, or related fields.
- Strong understanding of event planning, stage management, and cultural programming.
- Proven ability to collaborate across departments and work with diverse populations.
- Experience in facilitating workshops, leadership training, or group learning sessions.
- Training or certification in intercultural communication or leadership (preferred).
- Knowledge of cross-cultural frameworks and experience with multicultural communities.
- Experience working with culturally diverse communities in an academic or professional environment.
Compensation and Benefits
- Compensation: $85,000-95,000/year.

- Additionally, as a part-time position, this role is eligible for the International House 403(b) plan with a 5% matching contribution.
- Employees earn paid vacation totaling 18 days of accrual in the first year (with accrual increasing after 5 years), paid sick time, 14 paid holidays, and generous family leave and accommodations.
Must be able to work in person in Berkeley, CA. This position may require evening and weekend hours to support event needs.
