We’re seeking a language expert to support our Math and Science offering in multiple Indian languages.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR? 

 

We are primarily looking for someone who:

  • Loves Science (especially Chemistry) and talking about this subject [Comfortable in the subject up to class XII level]
  • Is fluent in Hindi language (speaking and writing).
  • Is native Hindi speaker.
  • Can localize videos in Hindi.
  • Have video making experience.

Other than these, the following will be great to have:

  • Having studied and/or taught in a Hindi medium school.
  • Experience in online teaching, video creation/Localization.
  • Being tech-savvy and tech-curious.
  • Proficiency in understanding the English language to be able to recreate videos.
  • Knowledge of Video making, video editing softwares.

The role will involve localization of videos from English to Hindi. It will also involve interactions with state teachers to better understand their needs.

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Localizing English Science videos into Hindi.
  • Reviewing and Editing KA ScienceHindi content and/or creating and localizing new content (videos) as needed; keeping quality metrics in mind (Contextualisation, cohesion, rigor, clarity, pedagogical approach, etc.)
  • Collect on-ground feedback on content by interacting with state teachers and incorporating the feedback into the content.
  • Going through Science textbooks to highlight any modifications needed before localisation.
  • Reading through original material, reviewing it and recreating it in the target language in case needed, ensuring that the meaning of the source is retained.
  • Along with State Board and NCERT Books using specialist dictionaries, thesauruses and reference books to find the closest equivalents for terminology and words used.
  • Researching on relevant phraseology to find the correct localization.
  • Proofreading and editing final translated versions on the basis of the basic quality parameters (Meaning, Readability, Compliance, Terminology, Consistency and Linguistics).
  • Retaining and developing knowledge on specialist areas of video localization.
  • Developing glossary for the specific terminologies to be used in Khan Academy’s localization process and continuously update it with new terminology.

LOCATION

This is a remote working opportunity. You will have the liberty to work from your home. Some travel may be required. (about 2 or 3 times a quarter)

Task 1: Recreate the following video into Hindi *

Details:
This task is to review your conversational tone, and the ability to localize, speak and write in Hindi. We always recreate videos with Hindi writing.  For this task, you can submit a video file where the camera captures the screen or paper where you're writing. If you're familiar with tools like Pentab or software like Sketchbook or Camtasia, feel free to use them to recreate these videos in Hindi. Please adhere to the following guidelines:

 

Guidelines: 

  1. Your tone and intonations need not match the author’s tone, but they need to be conversational

  2. The explanation should closely match the English version. All the examples, the flow/narrative, everything should be as close as possible to the English version.

  3. You do NOT need to do word to word translations. We know that that kills creativity and makes the process boring! Your audio will be thoroughly reviewed only to see if they deliver the same meaning. Ultimately, that’s what matters.

  4. In our experience, the localized videos are usually 20-30% longer than the original ones. So, don’t worry if your audio length stretches a bit. (of course, we don’t want the length to be twice the original length as well. So, do try to strike a balance there).

  5. Please upload your video file to Google Drive and paste those links in a document and upload that document in the application.
