Position Overview:
The Maintenance Supervisor – Paint Shop is responsible for leading and coordinating all maintenance activities that support the reliability, uptime, and performance of automated painting systems within a high-volume automotive manufacturing facility. This role oversees daily maintenance operations, ensures rapid response to equipment issues, and supports the performance of robotic, PLC, electrical, and mechanical systems used throughout the paint process— including pre-treatment, e-coat, primer, basecoat, clearcoat, ovens, and final inspection. Working cross-functionally with maintenance, production, quality, and controls engineering teams, the Maintenance Supervisor ensures that all paint shop equipment meets OEM standards, safety requirements, and production performance targets. This role is essential for sustaining production readiness, improving equipment reliability, and driving continuous improvement across the Paint Shop.

Key Responsibilities:

o Maintenance Leadership & Team Supervision

• Lead, schedule, and supervise maintenance technicians across all Paint Shop areas.

• Assign and prioritize work orders, preventive maintenance tasks, and troubleshooting activities.

• Ensure timely response to breakdowns to minimize production downtime.

• Coordinate with production leadership to align maintenance activities with takt time and throughput goals.

o Automation & Controls Support

• Oversee troubleshooting of PLC-based systems (Siemens S7/TIA Portal, Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff).

• Support maintenance of paint robots (ABB, Fanuc, KUKA, Dürr) and ensure proper operation of robotic paths and paint parameters.

• Ensure HMI/SCADA systems, alarms, and diagnostics function correctly.

• Validate automation changes and ensure safe release to production.

o Equipment Reliability & Preventive Maintenance 

• Develop and enforce preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for conveyors, ovens, booths, air handling units, and paint application systems.

• Monitor equipment KPIs (uptime, MTTR, MTBF) and implement corrective actions.

• Manage spare parts inventory and ensure availability of critical components.

o Process Monitoring & Optimization

• Monitor Paint Shop KPIs such as FTQ, overspray, paint usage, and rework rates.

• Collaborate with engineering teams to implement automation-based improvements.

• Support energy-efficiency initiatives related to compressed air, power, and paint consumption.

o Safety, Quality & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with CE, ISO 13849, OSHA, NFPA 79, and internal safety standards.

• Conduct risk assessments and ensure proper functioning of safety circuits (Pilz, Siemens, SICK). • Enforce LOTO procedures and ensure safe work practices.

• Support audits related to paint operations, maintenance, and automation controls.

o Documentation & Training

• Maintain accurate documentation: electrical schematics, PM checklists, troubleshooting guides, and equipment history.

• Develop SOPs and training modules for maintenance and production teams.

• Maintain change management logs and version control for automation-related updates.

 

Skills:

o Technical Skills

• PLC Troubleshooting — Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff.

• Robotics Maintenance — ABB, Fanuc, KUKA, Dürr.

• SCADA/HMI Systems — alarms, diagnostics, interface support.

• Strong understanding of electrical power systems, conveyors, ovens, electrostatic paint systems, and air handling units.

• Ability to read electrical schematics and use diagnostic tools.

• Familiarity with SAP PM, Maximo, or similar CMMS platforms.

o Soft Skills

• Problem Solving under production pressure.

• Leadership in cross-functional environments.

• Strong communication and technical writing skills.

• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated.

• Passion for automation, equipment reliability, and continuous improvement.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Controls Engineering, or related field. Master’s degree or PMP certification is a plus.

• 5+ years of automation or maintenance experience in an automotive paint shop or similar industrial environment.

• 3+ years of supervisory or team-lead experience in maintenance.

• Proven experience supporting high-throughput automated paint systems.

• Electrical safety certifications (NFPA 70E, OSHA) preferred.
