Structural Steel Bridge Inspector

About the Position

We’re seeking a Structural Steel Bridge Inspector to support large, complex heavy civil infrastructure programs, including highways, roads, bridges, and transit (bus and rail) projects delivered through both traditional and alternative delivery methods. This role covers structural steel on bridges and transportation structures in the field, including erection, field welding, bolting, coatings, and specialty systems such as bearings, expansion joints, and cable and post-tensioning hardware. You’ll verify delivered and erected steel against approved shop drawings, welding procedures, and contract specifications, and document what is needed to accept, pay for, or reject the work.

This is a full time, long term, on-site position located in the greater Savannah, GA region.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Inspect field erection of structural steel, including fit-up, alignment, camber, connection installation, and erection sequencing against the contractor’s approved erection plan.
  • Verify delivered steel members and connection material on arrival, including material traceability, mill test reports, dimensional conformance to approved shop drawings, and damage sustained in shipping or handling.
  • Review welding procedure specifications, procedure qualification records, welder qualification records, and mill test reports before field welding begins, and confirm the work is performed to the approved procedures.
  • Verify field-welded and high-strength bolted connections, including bolt installation, tensioning, and verification testing, with added rigor on fracture-critical members.
  • Confirm the contractor’s quality control program is being followed rather than described, and verify the approved fracture control plan is applied to fracture-critical work in the field.
  • Coordinate and witness nondestructive testing, including ultrasonic, magnetic particle, penetrant, and visual methods, and evaluate results against project acceptance criteria.
  • Verify installation of bearings, expansion joints, and cable or post-tensioning system components, including anchorage hardware, corrosion protection, stressing operations, and installation sequencing.
  • Monitor coating and corrosion protection work, including field touch-up and repair of coatings damaged in shipping or erection, and evaluate surface preparation, environmental conditions, and application against specification before the surface is closed out.
  • Document nonconforming work, coordinate corrective action with the contractor, and verify the correction before the connection is covered or the member is loaded.
  • Maintain the inspection record the program relies on for acceptance, payment, and claim review, including daily reports, inspection logs, material traceability, and deficiency tracking.
  • Coordinate inspection around the live traffic, rail corridors, waterways, and operations areas beneath and adjacent to the structure, and confirm work windows and protective measures are in place before work begins.
  • Report inspection status and open deficiencies to the construction management team, and carry field conditions into progress, quality, and schedule discussions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, construction management, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be licensed to operate motor vehicles in accordance with Georgia Law.
  • 7+ years of progressive transportation technician experience with a state highway agency as an employee or consultant for a State Highway Agency, with construction experience on at least five (5) complex bridges.
  • At least one representative project shall show experience with stay cable bridge construction or cable replacement (Maintenance).
  • Inspection experience on structural steel bridge erection, including field-welded and high-strength bolted connections.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret shop drawings, erection plans, welding procedure specifications, mill test reports, Bridge Foundation Investigation reports, Contractor’s layouts, and all other documents associated with projects.
  • Working knowledge of AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code, AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code, or comparable AASHTO, AISC, and state DOT structural steel requirements.
  • Experience documenting inspection findings, test results, and nonconforming work in daily reports and inspection logs.
  • Proficiency with digital inspection and field reporting platforms, such as Procore, Bluebeam Revu, or comparable platforms.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite/Office 365 (e.g., Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).

Required Certifications

Please Note: For titles containing GDOT certifications or passing scores on Engineering Skills Development Tests, certifications and passing scores must be obtained within six (6) months of beginning work on the GDOT project. Certifications from other agencies or states may possibly be substituted.

  • GSWCC Level 1a (Erosion Control)
  • WTS/WTCS for Traffic Control
  • CWI or SCWI
  • PTI/PCI

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or construction management.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification.
  • Experience serving as the owner’s lead steel inspector on a bridge package exceeding $100M in construction value.
  • Experience inspecting fracture-critical steel members and verifying that the approved fracture control plan is being followed.
  • Experience with industry standard construction management and document control software (e.g., Bentley ProjectWise, Kahua, e-Builder, etc.).

Compensation Details

Expected Salary: $120k-$160k/year ($58-$77/hour). Luster provides the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might offer for this position based on the successful candidate’s level and years of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, education, certifications, licenses, geographic location, etc. Luster reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range depending on circumstances not related to any status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
