Civil Engineer Intern

About the Position 

Are you a motivated college student eager to gain real-world experience on one of the Southeast’s most transformative transportation programs? Join Luster National this summer as a General Civil Engineering Intern supporting the Georgia Department of Transportation’s (GDOT) Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP). In this role, you’ll work alongside senior team members on multibillion-dollar highway, bridge, and interchange projects, supporting the day-to-day work of delivering construction in the field and in the office. You’ll build practical skills in plan reading, construction documentation, field observation, and project controls while gaining exposure to project management and transportation program delivery. 

This internship offers a strong foundation in civil engineering and construction management, positioning you to advance within the AEC industry. Intern Program participants include Luster (Employer of the Interns), Luster's Teaming Partners, and GDOT (Client of Luster’s Teaming Partners). The internship will focus on the GDOT MMIP. Two Civil Engineer Intern positions are available for the Summer 2027 cohort. 

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist in reviewing roadway, drainage, structural, and traffic control plans and specifications, and help identify conflicts and constructability issues. 
  • Accompany project staff on field visits to observe roadway, bridge, grading, drainage, and utility work, and document conditions and progress. 
  • Support construction documentation, including daily reports, inspection records, photo logs, submittals, and requests for information (RFIs). 
  • Assist with quantity takeoffs and pay item tracking, comparing installed work against contract plans and quantities. 
  • Support schedule and progress reporting, including data collection, status updates, and preparation of exhibits for project meetings. 
  • Use CAD and related software (Civil 3D, MicroStation/OpenRoads) and GDOT design manuals to review drawings and prepare markups and simple exhibits. 
  • Collaborate with environmental, survey, utility, and right-of-way team members to understand how each discipline affects project delivery. 
  • Attend progress, coordination, and partner meetings with Luster, GDOT, Prime partners, and contractor personnel, and prepare notes and action item summaries. 
  • Assist with document control, including filing, logging, and tracking project correspondence and records. 
  • Contribute to client-facing presentations and provide general engineering and project support as needed. 
  • Gain proficiency in industry-standard software and tools used for construction management and project controls. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • The program is open to undergraduate students (Junior or Senior level) enrolled in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, or a related major at an accredited four-year university in Georgia, such as Georgia Southern University or the University of Georgia. Eligible applicants should have completed at least two years of coursework toward their degree. The program is particularly well-suited for Juniors and Seniors who have made significant progress in completing their core degree requirements. 
  • Coursework in civil engineering fundamentals such as statics, materials, surveying, transportation, or construction methods. 
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications at an introductory level. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint). 
  • Willingness to travel to field sites as needed and to work outdoors on an active construction site, including wearing required personal protective equipment. 
  • Preference will be given to local candidates. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in pursuing professional certifications such as Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. 
  • Prior internship or field experience in civil engineering, construction, or surveying. 
  • Basic understanding of construction project phases, including design, procurement, and execution. 
  • Familiarity with civil design or construction software (e.g., Civil 3D, MicroStation/OpenRoads, Bluebeam, or Procore).

Salary  

The Interns will be W-2 employees of Luster and will be paid $20/hr. 

Internship Dates 

The duration of the Luster National, Inc. Internship Program is 10 weeks with a schedule of Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm ET. 

Start Date: Tuesday, June 1, 2027 

End Date: Friday, August 6, 2027
