We want MaintainX to be the go-to work execution platform for manufacturers across Maintenance, Operations, and Safety. To do that, we’re forming a new Search Engineering Team to build world-class indexing and retrieval systems that power discovery across the platform.

About the Role

We’re starting a brand-new Search team to make it easier for users find exactly what they need across MaintainX. As one of the first engineers on this team, you’ll play a critical role in designing, building, and scaling search infrastructure that reflects the unique shape of the MaintainX domain.

This is a zero-to-one role. You’ll be scoping ambiguity, shipping usable search early, and evolving it with fast feedback loops. If you enjoy building systems from scratch, obsess over performance and relevance, and want your work to power daily decisions across industries, we’d love to talk.

 

What you’ll do:

• Design and implement search infrastructure from the ground up, indexing pipelines, query layers, ranking systems, and more.
• Collaborate with product and domain experts to model search around core MaintainX entities like work orders, assets, and procedures.
• Ship fast, iterate fast, launch early versions, gather feedback, and improve rapidly.
• Operate and optimize distributed systems, ensuring reliability, performance, and scalability under real-world load.
• Drive architectural decisions, balancing correctness, performance, and long-term maintainability.
• Own integrations between search systems and upstream data sources.
• (Optional but valued) Explore semantic search, vector retrieval, and AI-enhanced relevance using modern ML tooling.
• On-call duties

About you:

• Experience building and owning backend infrastructure, ideally in Node.js, C#, or similar.
• Proven ability to take ambiguous problems from 0 → 1, including designing new systems and iterating without much prior art.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems (microservices, pipelines, indexing jobs, etc.).
• Experience with search engines such as Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Lucene, Solr, Typesense, or other.
• Familiarity with search-specific tuning: analyzers, BM25, shard sizing, cluster health, and relevance optimization.
• Comfort managing infrastructure using tools like Kubernetes, Terraform, and Atmos.

Nice to have:

• Familiarity with semantic search, embeddings, and tools like Faiss, Weaviate, Cohere, or sentence-transformers.
• Comfortable using modern AI tools like GPT, Copilot, or Cursor to boost productivity and streamline development.
• Understanding of multi-tenancy and data security, including ACLs, field-level access controls, and secure index partitioning.
• Experience building observability and success metrics into systems to monitor performance, usage, and impact.
