Investigative Fellow – Domestic Extremism
Manhattan Institute for Policy Research (MI) is a community of scholars, journalists, activists, and civic leaders who are united by a shared commitment to advancing economic opportunity, individual liberty, and the rule of law in America and its great cities. We are seeking a like-minded investigative reporter who will focus on rising domestic radicalism and the groups which advance it.
Through City Journal, the Manhattan Institute’s flagship publication, this role entails unpicking the nonprofits, activist groups, foreign influence operations, and underground networks that have supported recent domestic disruptions: vandalism, firebombings, riots, public infrastructure shutdowns, and even murders. These incidents are linked to a growing radical tendency on the fringes of our politics, fueled by political actors seeking to operate outside the system. In this role, you will work to shine a bright light on how those actors operate, in order to inform the public and help policymakers hold them accountable for lawless behavior. You will have the opportunity to deeply report stories, going beyond the day-to-day of the newsroom to really make change.
The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist, deeply versed in the details of the world of extremist activism. He or she should also be a demonstrated self-starter, with an ability not only to uncover stories but to clearly articulate them, and successfully retail them with the general public.
Required qualifications
• Five or more years’ experience in investigative journalism or similar investigative research role.
• A proven ability to source, investigate, and break significant stories.
• Self-starter, used to identifying and bringing stories to completion on your own initiative.
• Dogged commitment to accurate reporting of the facts.
• A portfolio of work related to the topic of domestic extremism and/or extremist political activism.
• Experience with a diversity of information gathering methods, including but not limited to: public records requests, data analysis, on-the-ground investigations, public filings research, etc.
• Demonstrated fluency with media, including social media, and a competency in taking your stories to the public.
• Significant familiarity with the work of City Journal and the Manhattan Institute, and a desire to work in support of MI’s mission.
Candidates will be considered for remote positions as well as positions working out of MI’s Manhattan office. Financial support is available for new hires moving to New York City. The
fellow will be expected to travel for their reporting and related media opportunities, as well as for MI events.
Benefits
MI offers generous benefits, including a hybrid work environment, four weeks paid vacation, a Summer Fridays program, paid paternity/maternity leave, medical and dental coverage, medical and dependent care FSA, mental health benefits, remote medicine, paid company cell phone, life insurance, and a 401(k) with a company-funded match. MI staff also benefit from the opportunity to collaborate and socialize with prominent scholars in our policy space.
The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $110,000/year. The salary offered to a candidate will depend on skills, experience, and education.
