Director of Compensation and Benefits

SUMMARY

We are seeking a strategic, analytical, and hands-on Director of Compensation and Benefits to partner with the VP of HR in designing and scaling MARA's total rewards program. This role is instrumental in developing compensation structures, optimizing benefits offerings, ensuring compliance, and supporting our continued growth.

As a key leader within the HR team, you will drive initiatives in compensation benchmarking, job leveling, equity planning, and the implementation of scalable, cost-effective benefits programs. The ideal candidate brings deep subject matter expertise, systems fluency (especially Workday), and a proactive approach to continuous improvement. You’ll serve as a trusted advisor to employees and managers to ensure that our total rewards programs align with MARA’s mission, culture, and business goals.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Benefits Strategy & Administration

  • Lead all employee benefits programs including health, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k), and wellness offerings.

  • Evaluate and enhance benefit offerings to support employee well-being and align with business goals.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for benefits brokers and vendors; manage RFPs, renewals, and service-level expectations.

  • Oversee annual open enrollment including planning, system configuration, employee communications, and issue resolution.

  • Ensure benefits compliance with federal and state regulations (ACA, COBRA, ERISA, etc.).

  • Resolve employee benefits questions and concerns with empathy and efficiency.

  • Monitor and analyze benefits utilization and costs; provide strategic recommendations for improvement.

Compensation Program Management

  • Design, implement, and maintain job leveling frameworks, compensation bands, and salary structures.

  • Lead market benchmarking and compensation analysis using tools such as Mercer and Comptryx.

  • Manage annual compensation review cycles including merit increases, bonuses, and equity grants.

  • Administer equity programs and collaborate on communications around new hire grants and refreshes.

  • Partner with HR and Finance on workforce planning, headcount forecasting, and compensation analytics.

  • Ensure compliance with wage and hour laws, pay transparency regulations, and internal governance.

HR Systems & Reporting

  • Oversee the configuration and optimization of Workday for compensation and benefits functions.

  • Develop and maintain compensation and benefits dashboards and ad hoc reporting.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure data integrity and system integration across platforms.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong knowledge of total rewards best practices, HR compliance, and employment regulations

  • Expertise in Workday or equivalent HRIS platforms

  • Strong analytical and technical skills

  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and team development abilities

  • Discreet and professional with sensitive information

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment

  • Experience supporting DEI initiatives through equitable compensation and benefits practices is a plus

  • Self-motivated with a strong bias for action and continuous improvement


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field

  • 8–10 years of progressive experience in compensation and benefits

  • Proven track record designing compensation frameworks and managing benefits programs

  • Experience with equity programs, job leveling, and total rewards strategy

  • In-depth understanding of relevant laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, ACA, COBRA, ERISA)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience leading vendor relationships and open enrollment processes

  • Adept with HRIS systems, particularly Workday

  • Detail-oriented and adaptable in fast-paced environments
