Chief of Staff to the CEO

San Francisco, CA, New York, NY, Portland, OR, or Remote within Canada or United States

Mercury* is building a complete financial stack for startups. Since we launched in 2019, our customer base has grown to over 200,000 startups and small businesses from all around the world. As Mercury continues to ship new products and deliver the best experiences for our customers, the lines of scaling a company become a bit blurrier—that’s where you come in.

As the Chief of Staff to the CEO, we’re looking for someone to make those lines clearer and to scale the CEO’s impact across the company; a strategic generalist who can quickly plug in across various teams and build relationships across the company to lead mission-critical, cross-functional efforts that adapt to meet the CEO’s highest business demands and drive company priorities forward.

*Mercury is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services provided by Choice Financial Group, Column N.A., and Evolve Bank & Trust, Members FDIC.

As part of the journey, we would expect you to:

  • Support the CEO in driving critical, high impact projects across a variety of business initiatives, and be an integral thought partner to our Executive leadership team.
  • Own coordination, communication, and alignment of resources of various business initiatives that fall under the remit of the CEO, while maintaining clear reporting to the CEO on the initiatives’ workstreams and progress, and helping to eliminate obstacles, reduce friction, and ensure initiatives are executed.
  • Partner with Executive leadership, Finance, and HR / People teams to contribute to Mercury’s human capital efforts, including capacity & workforce planning, organizational development, budgeting, and other related areas.
  • When needed, drive analysis and research that will help inform company strategy and support high-quality, long-term decisions.
  • In some cases, write and edit thoughtful, precise, and informative copy on behalf of the CEO, including internal documents and external communication (e.g. blog posts, social media posts, etc.)
  • Generally, be a Swiss army knife who can plug into any area of the business on behalf of the CEO, and have an enthusiastic approach to solving difficult problems and learning new things with trust and care.

There are lots of paths that could lead you to be successful in a role like this; we think the strongest candidates will have some of this experience:

  • 5+ years of experience leading company-level strategic projects or programs, such as in management consulting, business operations, strategic operations, Chief of Staff, corporate development, product management, or other applicable roles—the more diversified your experience, the better. 7+ years of experience overall.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and influence across various lines of business and senior-level stakeholders, and navigate teams through complex situations.
  • Ability to work independently to identify issues, and proactively propose, build and implement the solutions to address them.
  • Comfortability working in an ambitious, fast-paced environment, with a strong understanding of when to escalate urgent issues vs. owning the solution.
  • Have a knack for building structure and documentation to track large initiatives (Google Sheets, Notion, Asana), and comfortability with manipulating, tracking, and interpreting data (SQL, Tableau, Metabase.)
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of ownership, and can approach new problems with curiosity and first-principles thinking.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and respect for confidentiality and discretion.
  • Be comfortable operating in a rapidly evolving, and sometimes ambiguous environment.
