Strategic Operations Lead
In the 1960s, NASA undertook one of the most complex projects in human history: getting people to the moon. What made it possible wasn’t just brilliant scientists—it was rigorous coordination, systems thinking, and a relentless focus on aligning thousands of people around a shared mission. That same kind of orchestration is what helps modern companies achieve ambitious goals.
At Mercury, we’re looking for a Strategic Operations Lead to play that role—leading our CORs (our spin on OKRs) process and driving strategic execution across the company. You’ll help teams stay focused on what matters, resolve cross-functional friction, and ensure our most important work actually lifts off. You will use data and writing to create clarity on our strategy and attainment, setting up regular communications and health metrics. Using our goals as a prioritization framework, you will lead or manage cross-functional projects that are critical to attaining our goals.
This is a highly cross-functional role that will tackle a diverse range of problems to help Mercury achieve its ambitious goals.
*Mercury is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services provided through Choice Financial Group, Column N.A. and Evolve Bank & Trust, Members FDIC
As part of the journey, we would expect you to:
- Lead bi-annual strategic planning, ensuring all teams are aligned with strategic goals
- Refine our existing planning process, templates and tooling to simplify process and clarify communication
- Facilitate cross-functional coordination and harmonization, resolving dependencies, duplicative efforts and bottlenecks
- Support teams in setting ambitious goals that drive the most critical business outcomes; help translate the overall strategy and financial plan into measurable goals and product-drive initiatives
- Lead ongoing strategic discussions and communication to ensure we are achieving outcomes and stay aligned on what matters
- Run monthly strategic reviews to surface the most salient insights and challenges and drive business outcomes
- Track and monitor goals/roadmaps to ensure alignment with Mercury’s overarching strategy + surface when initiatives are deviating from plan
- Analyze the data relevant to any project or focus area, as needed; run your own queries, build your own dashboards, build your own Pivot Tables
- Drive company-wide communication (All Hands, Slack) so that the team remains clear on our priorities, their evolution, and progress against goals
- Build and iterate on a clear picture of our business’s health metrics and tackle projects that support key improvements
- Act as a swiss-army knife driving critical cross-functional projects and analysis in support of our company strategy
- Be a positive force for prioritization and operational excellence, improving company and cross-functional prioritization through collaboration, communication and process
There are lots of paths that could lead you to be successful in a role like this; we think the strongest candidates will have some of this experience:
- You have a knack for creating simple processes and tooling that drive business outcomes. You are excellent at finding the line between chaos and bureaucracy
- You are data-oriented (SQL, Excel) and understand how to structure information to tell a story and drive prioritization based on data
- You are detail-oriented, and able to toggle between the 30k-ft strategic view and specific details
- You are an excellent written and verbal communicator, and know how to adjust your communication based on your audience
- You are low ego and have a proven track record for working well across a wide range of people and teams
- A background in Fintech is preferred, and at a minimum you are curious about banking, fintech, our competition, and how companies build durable strategies and understand how those inform Mercury’s trajectory
- You have multiple years of experience in strategy consulting, chief of staff, business operations, investing, or a comparable role in high-growth tech companies - especially fintech
