About the Role
We're seeking a Data Analyst to join our growing team and help transform raw data into actionable insights that drive business decisions across underwriting, operations, and strategic planning. In this role, you'll own end-to-end analytics projects, build scalable reporting solutions in Looker and Google Cloud Platform, and work directly with leadership to answer critical business questions.
This is a high-impact role where your work will directly influence product strategy, operational efficiency, and growth initiatives. The ideal candidate combines strong analytical thinking with technical execution skills, has a passion for storytelling with data, and thrives in a fast-paced startup environment where priorities shift quickly and autonomy is essential.
Location
Candidates based in Denver, CO, Madison, WI, or San Francisco, CA are strongly preferred to facilitate close collaboration with our team.
Analytics & Insights
- Conduct deep-dive analyses on underwriting performance, loss ratios, and portfolio trends to inform strategic decisions
- Develop financial and operational models to support forecasting, budgeting, and business planning
- Translate complex data findings into clear, actionable recommendations for non-technical stakeholders
- Partner with underwriting and operations teams to identify opportunities for process optimization
- Perform ad-hoc analyses to answer critical business questions and support leadership decision-making
Business Intelligence & Reporting
- Design, build, and maintain interactive dashboards and reports in Looker (our primary BI platform)
- Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and create automated reporting frameworks
- Develop self-service analytics capabilities to empower teams across the organization
- Monitor business metrics and identify trends, anomalies, and areas for improvement
- Create executive-level presentations and financial reports for leadership and board meetings
Data Engineering & Infrastructure
- Write efficient SQL queries to extract, transform, and analyze data from multiple sources in BigQuery
- Build and maintain data pipelines using Dataform and Cloud Functions in Google Cloud Platform
- Ensure data quality and integrity through validation frameworks and testing protocols
- Work with data from Socotra (our policy administration system) and other insurance platform APIs
- Collaborate with engineering teams to improve data infrastructure and accessibility
- Document data definitions, business logic, and analytical processes
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with FP&A to support financial planning, variance analysis, and investor reporting
- Partner with product and engineering teams to define data requirements for new features
- Support underwriting with risk assessment analytics and portfolio segmentation
- Communicate insights effectively to stakeholders at all levels of the organization
Qualifications
- 3-5+ years of experience in data analytics, business intelligence, or related roles
- Advanced SQL proficiency for complex data extraction, transformation, and analysis (joins, window functions, CTEs, query optimization)
- Strong experience with BI tools such as Looker, Tableau, or Power BI
- Understanding of data modeling, statistical analysis, and analytical methodologies
- Excellent communication skills with ability to translate technical concepts for business audiences
- Entrepreneurial mindset with ability to work independently and drive projects to completion
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment where priorities change frequently
Preferred Qualifications
- FP&A background with experience in financial modeling, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Data engineering skills including experience building ETL pipelines in GCP (BigQuery, Dataform, Cloud Storage)
- Experience in the insurance industry with knowledge of underwriting metrics, loss ratios, and insurance operations
- Familiarity with version control (Git) and modern data stack tools
- Experience with Socotra or other insurance policy administration systems
- Python or R for statistical analysis and data manipulation
