We are looking for a dynamic leader to help build and lead the 1st line of Defence (1LoD) Risk & Control Discipline for Monzo in Europe. We want to bring our Monzo magic to the EU and redefine the way that people interact with money. You will be at the forefront of ensuring we grow and scale in a safe and compliant manner, whilst delivering a delightful experience for our customers.

Embedding and managing the risk and control framework across the business. As part of the first line, this role is responsible for ensuring that our products, services and business operations are aligned with our risk appetite, policies, regulatory requirements, and internal controls. The candidate will lead the design and execution of risk and control initiatives and work closely with the various stakeholders to identify, assess, monitor, and mitigate risks while fostering a strong risk-aware culture.

🔑 You’ll play a key role by…

  • Implementing and managing the bank's risk management and control framework, ensuring that all business activities are aligned with the bank’s risk appetite and regulatory obligations.
  • Leading the 1LoD risk identification and materiality assessment across various business functions, ensuring appropriate risk mitigation strategies and controls are developed, implemented, tested and are effective.
  • Developing and maintaining a robust system of internal controls within the business and regularly test their effectiveness. Work with Monzo Europe’s collectives to ensure that control gaps are identified and remediated promptly.
  • Acting as the point of contact for incidents and risk events or control breakdowns within the first line. Lead investigations into incidents, ensuring root causes are identified, and corrective actions are taken.
  • Preparing and presenting regular risk and control governance reports and MI to senior management, outlining risk exposures, control effectiveness, and key risk and control indicators. This includes escalating ‘top’ risks to management and board level committees as appropriate.
  • Working closely with the second line Risk and Compliance function and third line internal audit to ensure effective oversight of the risk management framework, supporting their independent review and challenge functions.
  • Providing hands-on risk and control guidance and training to business unit leaders and teams, ensuring they understand their risk ownership responsibilities and are equipped to manage risks effectively.
  • Contributing to the development, review, and implementation of risk-related policies, procedures, and standards, ensuring they are understood and applied consistently within the first line.
  • Ensuring business processes and controls comply with applicable regulatory requirements, working with the compliance team to stay informed on changes in the regulatory landscape.
  • Promoting a risk-aware culture throughout the bank by engaging in communication, training, and awareness initiatives to strengthen the first line's accountability for risk management.
  • Establishing and leading the Risk & Control discipline for Monzo Europe ensuring effective delivery through adequate resourcing, processes and technology across the businesses and collectives in the European Union.
  • Building and providing strategic direction and leadership to the Risk & Control team in Monzo Europe.
  • Partnering with Monzo Group Risk & Control Discipline to help drive consistency and shared best practice across our global entities.
