📍London/UK Remote | 💰£125,400 - £150,000 + Incentive Awards tied to your performance + Benefits  ✨

About the team:

Our Borrowing (lending) business is growing rapidly across both existing products and with the planned launch of new initiatives. As our lending portfolio grows, our second line of defence Credit Risk Oversight team is growing with it and we’re looking for a Head of Credit Strategy Oversight to join us!

Our Credit Risk Oversight team is crucial in providing support and challenge to our Borrowing teams in the first line of defence to help Monzo grow safely. We’re looking for someone (maybe you?!) to lead the team in delivering insightful oversight through a high performing partnership with our 1st line Credit colleagues. You’ll be taking a hands-on leadership role, managing a team of second line credit risk managers and analysts to define and deliver independent assurance and meaningful input to -  and challenge of - credit risk management across the lifecycle.

Ideally you’ll have broad experience and in-depth knowledge of retail unsecured and business credit risk strategy in financial services. You’ll have seen first-hand how several credit portfolios develop at all stages of the credit cycle.  And you’ll have seen the many ways the performance of retail credit portfolios can be changed. You’ll be confident in influencing and shaping credit strategy and be comfortable working with senior stakeholders. You’ll also be someone who likes getting into the details, analysing data and providing constructive challenges.

Your day-to-day

  • Leading the credit risk strategy oversight team, setting the agenda and owning the delivery of our independent oversight and assurance plan across Monzo’s lending portfolios
  • Supporting the team in reviewing credit strategy and product changes, highlighting key risks and issues, providing constructive feedback and challenge, and influencing decisions at senior level
  • Overseeing the ongoing oversight of credit risk, including risk appetite and reporting, portfolio monitoring, financial projections and governance
  • Partnering with colleagues in the first line of defence to support credit strategy changes, including new product launches and pilots, ensuring we deliver magical lending products for our customers whilst meeting our risk appetite
  • Embracing new and innovative technology, including leading the adoption of AI tools to enhance our credit risk oversight approach
  • Providing credit expertise and input into strategic projects and Monzo-wide initiatives, such as new product launches or business planning and stress-testing
  • Taking a balanced and proportionate approach to risk management, making sure that managing risks becomes part of everyone at Monzo’s day-to-day role

You should apply if you:

  • Have significant practical experience in credit risk management within consumer or small business lending - experience in unsecured, revolving products would be particularly beneficial
  • You are data driven, and comfortable defining and interpreting analysis to understand credit performance and trends. Being able to get hands-on with data is a plus - so experience in SQL, Python or similar is a bonus!
  • You understand how to balance risk and commercial outcomes, with experience in using scorecards and NPV models to develop strategies for making credit decisions
  • Have exceptional written and verbal communication skills that can be flexed for different audiences,
  • Are an effective leader and people manager, with the ability to build and nurture high performing teams
  • Think strategically but are able to work in the detail with your team
  • Have a track record of building and maintaining trusting relationships with stakeholders at all levels, and can provide effective and respectful challenge
  • Are passionate about technology, and what we’re doing here at Monzo excites you!

The interview process:

Our interview process usually involves up to four main stages via Google Hangouts:

  • An initial call with our recruiter
  • A call with our Credit Risk Oversight Director, the hiring manager for the role
  • A role-specific call with colleagues from 1st Line Credit
  • A leadership and values call

🙌What’s in it for you

  • 💰£125,400 - £150,000 ➕ Incentive Awards tied to your performance
  • 📍This role can be based in our London office, but we're open to distributed working within the UK (with ad hoc meetings in London, the team currently meet once per week).
  • ⏰ We offer flexible working hours and trust you to work enough hours to do your job well, at times that suit you and your team.
  • 📚 Learning budget of £1,000 a year for books, training courses and conferences
  • We will set you up to work from home; all employees are given Macbooks and for fully remote workers we will provide extra support for your work-from-home setup
  • ➕ And much more, see our full list of benefits here

Our average process takes around 6 weeks but we will always work around your availability. You will have the chance to speak to our recruitment team at various points during your process.
