Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international organization that provides medical care to the people who need it most. The organization cares for people affected by conflict, disease outbreaks, disasters, and social exclusion in more than 70 countries. MSF offers medical humanitarian assistance solely based on need, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or politics. Our international project teams include medical, logistical, and administrative staff, most of them hired locally and working with their own communities. Our actions are guided by medical ethics and the principles of independence, impartiality, and neutrality. We also bear witness and speak out about the experiences of our colleagues and patients.

Role Overview

The Associate Director, Audience Strategy will collaborate across mass market, midlevel, and strategic philanthropy giving programs to deliver optimal donor journey experiences, increasing retention and revenue. Reporting to the Senior Director, Individual Giving & Strategic Philanthropy, they will enhance donor communications, boosting loyalty and financial commitment. They will also oversee acquisition strategies with input from audiences and stakeholders. This exciting new role involves leading an evolving, multidisciplinary subunit and inspiring teams to innovate and create the never-before-seen!

 

The Associate Director will lead in new ways, focusing on collaboration with audiences and channels to deliver powerful experiences. They will partner with Market Research and Data & Analytics to discover and synthesize insights to inform innovations. They will advance our marketing offers and segmentation with sound data-driven decision-making, creative thinking, and best practices to achieve objectives.

 

The Associate Director will lead strategic CX engagements, focusing on where we can significantly improve. They will spot moments that matter and close gaps to minimize value attrition and maximize retention. They will partner to ensure the implementation of integrated strategies and monitor performance.

 

The Associate Director will be a thought leader and an essential contributor to planning and budgeting.

 

Department Accountabilities 

Prospecting
Pursue strategic opportunities in coherence with MSF-USA´s strategy, that create long-term value for the movement by identifying and developing new audience segments or donors for its mission.

Donor Cultivation, Engagement, and Management
Build trust and loyalty with potential and existing donors. At the simplest level, update donors on activities. At a more complex level, build long-term relationships with key donors and key donor segments. Take overall responsibility for designing, developing, and delivering the donor engagement strategy. May be through channels or through personal relationships.

Fundraising
Secure reliable, sustainable and efficient resources in alignment with MSF-US commitments.

Brand Positioning
Drive awareness and consideration through brand positioning based on the brand strategy and implement brand plans.

Best-in-Class Fundraising Systems and Capabilities
Deploy and champion the latest technological systems and capabilities that push the boundaries of what Development can produce for its donors.

Spot potential improvements in our existing business practices and bring forward innovative solutions. Develop and deliver these projects within the organization's change management program, working with guidance from senior colleagues.

Develop tactical plans for optimizing resources and assets being managed within a given area or department.

Develop and/or deliver budget plans with guidance from senior colleagues.

Supervisory Responsibility

This role does not supervise direct reports.

 

Desired Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Minimum 10 years of professional fundraising experience with a fully rounded knowledge of marketing and fundraising at large-scale organizations, including experience leading mass market or midlevel audiences or the equivalent corporate expertise.
  • Experience successfully managing acquisition.
  • Deep understanding of audience segmentation and industry trends in Acquisition, One-time giving, Midlevel Giving, Sustainer Giving, and key offline and digital channels, including DRTV and peer-to-peer texting.
  • Experience in design thinking and CX mapping.
  • Experience crafting data-driven, audience-first strategies for direct response, offline and online.
  • Strong analytical skills and capacity to monitor audience performance and trends.
  • Experience translating data and insights from multiple sources to provide actionable recommendations.
  • Success in launching new initiatives and developing new business practices.
  • Successful track record of leading, juggling, and completing projects in a large matrix organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence, work collaboratively, and gain consensus across functions with stakeholders at various levels and with external partners to achieve results.
  • Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving and financial vehicles donors utilize for high-impact philanthropy.

Preferred

  • Keen attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Experience managing direct reports; leading, coaching, and mentoring direct reports in leadership roles.
  • Working knowledge of project management systems and productivity tools.
  • Exposure to market research, analytics, and business intelligence teams and the ability to translate business needs to model and develop dashboard ideas.
  • Prior experience in vendor and agency management.
  • Familiarity with fundraising tools and databases such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud and NPSP.
  • High emotional intelligence. Maintains tact and diplomacy at all levels.
  • Excellent storytelling, presentation, and persuasive skills, both written and oral.
  • A keen eye for captivating graphics, engaging messaging, and sophisticated marketing strategies for a high-value audience.

Travel Requirements 

Ability to travel periodically to meet with our agency partners, attend seminars and conferences, and join international skill-sharing meetings.

Compensation

$124,346 to $186,518; New employees will be compensated from the minimum to midpoint based on experience
