Job Description:
The Director of Engineering will lead the development and implementation of Newsweek’s technology strategy. This role involves overseeing the engineering team, collaborating across functions, and ensuring the delivery of innovative software solutions that align with our strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership: Lead the formulation and execution of the company’s technology strategy, ensuring it aligns with the broader business objectives.
- Team Development: Manage, mentor, and grow a team of engineers, fostering an environment of innovation and high performance.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with the product team and maintain strong collaborative relationships with the editorial and business teams to ensure technology solutions meet organizational needs.
- Project Management: Ensure the timely delivery of projects and initiatives, managing resources and schedules effectively.
- Innovation and Growth: Drive technological innovation and organizational growth by adopting the latest technologies and best practices.
- Continuous Learning: Promote a culture of continuous improvement and learning within the technology department.
- Budget Oversight: Manage the engineering budget, planning, and reporting on expenditures to optimize resource allocation.
- Reporting Structure: Report directly to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), ensuring strategic alignment and providing regular updates on team progress and technology developments.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Proven experience as a Director of Engineering or in a similar leadership role within a technology environment.
- Technical Expertise: Strong technical background with extensive experience in software development and systems architecture.
- Familiar Technologies: Proficiency in Next.js, GraphQL, WordPress VIP, and AWS, with openness to integrating additional technologies as needed. Familiarity with using AI to improve and automate workflows and products.
- Coding Skills: Impeccable coding skills and familiarity with modern software engineering practices.
- Leadership Skills: Excellent leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire, lead, and manage a high-performing team.
- Innovative Thinking: Capability to drive innovation and growth within a dynamic industry.
- Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills to effectively tackle complex issues.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication and collaboration skills, essential for interacting with various internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Education: BSc/BA in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; an MSc/MA will be a plus.
Salary Expectation: $120,000+ commensurate with experience.
