Instant Replay Assistant

Assist the Replay Official and on-field officiating crew on instant replay related matters. Replay Assistants are required to take and pass the NFL officiating rules test given at the clinic. Any Replay Assistants who do not pass the test are required to take and pass a make-up NFL officiating rules test during the preseason.  Replay Assistant is the backup Replay Official if the assigned Replay Official is unable to perform his or her duties on gameday. Replay Assistants are required to work at least one half of a game during the preseason as the Replay Official to prepare for that potential role.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for an attend multi-day officiating clinic in July, focusing on NFL officiating rules and philosophies, and instant replay philosophies and mechanics. 
  • Before each assigned game, review weekly memos, training tapes, and any other materials provided by the NFL officiating office or assigned Referee.

  • Prepare for and participate in the weekly crew pregame meeting
  • Participate in replay equipment testing at the stadium approximately 2 hours before kickoff.
  • Participate in all pregame meetings with Replay Official and Video Operator and Replay Communicator.
  • Assist Replay Official in supervising all instant replay GDAs (e.g., Video Operator, Replay Communicator, Replay Field Technicians, and Field Communicator).
  • Along with the Replay Official, verbalize the game situation and potential replay stoppage situations on every play (based on down/distance, score, formation, or any other relevant information).
  • Verify the number of players on defense (or receiving team) on every play during the game and verbally announce whether there are a legal number of players on the field.
  • Verify that the clock properly is running or stopped before and at the snap.
  • Verbally announce the down, distance, and line to gain before every play.
  • During the play, the Replay Assistant is responsible for watching downfield action, including sidelines and end lines, and identifying any players who step out of bounds.
  • Identify and announce the ruling on the field after every play, including the final spot and clock status.
  • When the Replay Official is responsible to challenge a play, the Replay Assistant will provide a detailed description of all offensive team actions.
  • When a Head Coach is responsible to challenge a play, the Replay Assistant will observe the Head Coach and announce a potential challenge or when a challenge flag is thrown.
  • If there is a foul on the play, the Replay Assistant will identify and announce the foul based on the preliminary signal, the spot of the penalty flag, and any on-field conversations or movements of the penalty flag.
  • On punt plays, the Replay Assistant will watch the gunner on the near side of the field to verify that they do not step out of bounds before the ball is touched. If a gunner steps out of bounds, announce the number of the player who stepped out of bounds and verify that he is not the first to touch the ball.
  • Assist the Replay Official in recommendation to AMGC whether to confirm or challenge every play where the final on-field ruling (after administering penalties) results in a score or turnover. If the decision is not immediately clear, the Replay Assistant should analyze the line feed as the Replay Official reviews additional camera angles on the replay technician's screen and consults with New York.
  • Assist the Replay Official in all decisions whether to challenge every play after the two-minute warning of either half and throughout overtime.
  • During a replay review, assist the Replay Official to identify relevant video on the broadcast feed, and verify the administrative information following the review.
  • Along with Replay Official, responsible for ensuring that all communications with Field Communicator and AMGC technician are made pursuant to approved procedures.
  • Work with Replay Official to prepare post-game reports of replay situations during game and evaluation of all replay GDAs.
  • Prepare for and participate in any crew meetings during the week.
Qualifications 
  • Strong knowledge of NFL rules and Instant Replay philosophies and mechanics.
  • Shared responsibility for supervising replay game day assistants
  • Minimum two years of on-field football officiating experience (high school or above) or two years of experience as an NFL Video Operator or collegiate Replay Communicator or Replay Official.
  • Experience in reviewing and analyzing football video for officiating purposes
  • Ability to make decisions in time-sensitive and high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to work well with others as member of a crew and an instant replay team.
  • Excellent verbal and analytical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Physical Demands

  • There are no unusual physical demands for this position.

Travel

  • Weekly travel is required
  • Ability to travel within the United States (and potentially internationally) for annual clinic in mid-July and for all assigned games from August through early February, including games scheduled during the normal work week, on weekends, and on holidays.
  • Travel to game location and arrive at the hotel for assigned game location no later than the calendar day preceding the game.

Salary / Pay Range

Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would the NFL consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range. 

Expected Hours of Work

  • On average, 20-30 hours per week, including preparation, meetings, travel, and gameday responsibilities.
