Principal Engineer – Electrical AC/DC

Essential Functions / Responsibilities

 

The Principal Engineer – Electrical will develop and integrate technology across the global organization, manage complex product issues and oversee development within the power electronics area of expertise. The Principal Engineer will provide key leadership across the business for long-term technology planning and contribute to driving the business growth strategy. The Principal Engineer must have extensive technical knowledge of the company’s product lines, including front end power AC/DC rectifiers, DC/DC converters, and electrical vehicle fast charging power supplies.

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Leads critical technical aspects of design projects and serves as a technical advisor to senior management.
  • Mentors design engineers and guides technical decisions based on performance, safety, reliability and cost effectiveness. Provides design direction and training in areas of AC/DC power supply design, magnetics design and design for Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) performance.
  • Analyzes and develops new opportunities, requirements, specifications, and proposed products. Maintains knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, anticipates market trends and customer requirements, and proposes responsive actions using experience with the company’s power electronics architectures, topologies and control algorithms.
  • Works with Technology Managers to develop technology roadmaps and conducts research projects to advance innovation regarding AC/DC power electronics with the key drivers of efficiency, power density, and cost.
  • Conducts technical design reviews for all product lines, specifically AC/DC products. Ensures that designs meet the technical requirements, design checklists and processes are updated with the latest lessons learned and industry best practices, and participates in project safety assessments.
  • Provides technical leadership on intellectual property (IP), patents, and trade secrets. Reviews potential designs, concepts, and ideas and advises next steps for patent protection. Prepares invention disclosures when needed.
  • Assesses the needs of the engineering design teams and provides technical guidance, direction, and training to new and experienced engineers, specialists, and technicians.
  • Manages technical consultation to cross-functional teams throughout the business to improve or resolve manufacturing, products, suppliers, or field issues. Facilitates and drives technical knowledge exchange between the global R&D teams.
  • Advises customers on applications and technical issues regarding company products and technology.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Masters of Science in Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science
  • Minimum 15 additional years of experience in power electronics design with a focus on single and three phase rectifier products
  • At least 10 years of experience in a leadership capacity for power electronics products and technologies
  • Fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese
  • Willingness and ability to travel 10-20% of the time.

Desired Characteristics

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or Control Systems
  • Demonstrated leadership in defining the state-of-the-art technologies in AC/DC power, along with the ability to teach and set standard practices.
  • Design expertise in electric vehicle DC fast charging, high-efficiency AC/DC conversion, and wireless power transmission. Experience with single phase and three phase AC/DC topologies for high efficiency and power density.
  • Design experience with magnetics components operating within AC/DC conversion circuits.
  • Knowledge of IPC 9592 - Requirements for Power Conversion Devices for the Computer and Telecommunications Industries.
  • Understanding of agency requirements that apply to power conversion products such as safety agency standards; Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) standards; input Surge requirements and harmonics standards
  • Demonstrated ability to document, plan, and manage programs that further the knowledge, understanding and capability of the business
  • Ability to drive projects to completion, proven problem analysis and resolution skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong influencing, interpersonal and leadership skills
