Battery Electrolyte Scientist

Fremont, California, United States

ABOUT ONE

To transition away from fossil fuels, the world needs innovative and affordable technology. That’s why Our Next Energy (ONE) is accelerating the world’s progress toward net zero emissions and electrification by doubling the range of electric vehicles, prioritizing safety and building a sustainable U.S. supply chain.

Founded in 2020, ONE designs and manufactures energy storage solutions for vehicles, renewables and the grid that use safe, sustainable LFP chemistry based on abundant iron. ONE is headquartered in Novi, Michigan with offices in Fremont, CA.

ONE is looking for a wide variety of innovators to help us engineer, test, improve, manufacture and market our technology. Join the #ONETeam today and be part of Forbes #3 “Best Startups to Work For” in 2023.

ONE team members are transforming the energy storage industry worldwide. The future will arrive faster if we build it together. Visit www.one.ai/careers for more information.

The Advanced Engineering & Research team develops transformative battery designs and novel product concepts to speed global electric vehicle adoption and energy decarbonization.

Your focus as an Electrolyte Scientist will be to develop and scale new cell technologies to radically improve energy density, power, safety, and/or cost vs. conventional EV technologies. Your work will take advantage of ONE’s unique hybrid pack architecture and high power-density DCDC converter, which enable the use of cells with significantly reduced life, power, and temperature requirements, accelerating the time to market of new cell and materials technology. You will lead projects with material suppliers, cell manufacturers, and ONE’s in-house cell and pack development teams to synthesize, formulate, characterize, and scale new materials.

We are looking for passionate scientists who share our values. Our team is comprised of various integrated disciplines, including chemistry/materials, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and software. Therefore, collaboration in group settings and clear communication with people within and outside your technical discipline are critical to becoming a successful team member.

You should enjoy working on a small team where you will have substantial and critical responsibility for parts of the final product. We are working on groundbreaking technologies, so you’ll be energetic, adaptable, and a fast learner who can make quick design judgments with limited information. As a member of this group, you will also play a crucial role in growing the team to meet continuously evolving challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Develop improved electrolyte chemistries and formulations for ONE’s cell technologies.
  • Work with ONE’s lab operations team to synthesize, formulate, and characterize new materials.
  • Evaluate and select the most promising materials technologies from vendors for use in ONE cells and packs.
  • Lead projects with material suppliers to customize materials for ONE’s cell technologies.
  • Work with our manufacturing team to scale your discovered materials for prototyping, pilot, and production.

Within 3 months you will:

  • Establish SOPs for material formulation and testing
  • Identify promising material technologies for ONE’s key cell technologies
  • Initiate one or more projects for new or optimized materials for ONE’s products
  • Become familiar with the ONE team and established products

Within 6 months you will:

  • Take ownership of development and scaling of critical materials for ONE’s cell programs
  • Validate improved materials in large format (>10 Ah) cells
  • Establish a roadmap and R&D plan for radical improvement in material performance

Desired Qualifications

You should be familiar with all, proficient with many, and expert at some of the following, in no particular order:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in chemistry, material science, or related field
  • Proven track record in discovery of new materials, synthetic processes, or analytical methods
  • Experience in electrochemistry and/or organic chemistry in a laboratory environment
  • Experience with materials development for batteries is a plus
  • Strong written/verbal communication and organizational skills
  • 4+ years of experience in battery engineering a plus

We encourage you to apply even if you don’t match every requirement posted for this role. No candidate will be a perfect match to our description, so if you are passionate about working on batteries, vehicle electrification, or decarbonizing energy and have similar experience to what we are looking for, we encourage you to apply. Diverse backgrounds and experiences promote innovation, and our goal is to build a team that encompasses a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and skills.
