WHAT YOU WILL DO

As an onX SDET & QA Manager, you will lead a team of SDETs, Quality Assurance Engineers, and Quality Assurance Analysts. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in test automation frameworks for native mobile applications and web applications, as well as a background in general software quality assurance. This position requires a proactive individual who excels in an independent work environment, demonstrates exceptional management and leadership skills, and maintains a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. Your leadership will not only drive innovation but also foster a culture of collaboration and learning within the team, ensuring the delivery of high quality solutions. This position reports to the head of the onX QA & SDET team.

As an SDET & QA Manager, your day to day responsibilities would look like:

(Essential Job Duties)

  • Lead the technical vision and day-to-day operations of the SDET team (currently 6 SDETs). Establish and drive a long-term roadmap for the SDET team. The roadmap must have clear connections to product roadmaps and company OKRs.
  • Manage QA team members (currently 2) within onX’s critical Core domain team.
  • Provide career development, mentoring, and performance management to your team members. Give hands-on technical guidance in the areas of testing and test automation.
  • Oversee performance, load, and reliability testing to validate the platform’s ability to scale with user and data growth in a high-velocity, high-volume environment.
  • Champion the adoption of advanced software development tools and practices, ensuring that we stay at the forefront of technology trends for quality. 
  • Increase usage of AI and new AI-based workflows by QAs and SDETs in order to improve test effectiveness.
  • Uphold and advance quality, performance, reliability and security standards, collaborating within the Core domain to integrate robust testing processes and tools effectively.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for process improvement, technological innovation, and team growth, setting short and long-term goals that propel people forward.
  • Cultivate a culture of learning and development within the team, encouraging ongoing education, experimentation, and adaptation to new challenges and opportunities.
  • Drive team OKRs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and facilitating regular progress tracking and course correction as needed.
  • Establish and monitor key testing KPIs like automation coverage metrics, test execution efficiency, and release quality indicators.

LOCATION

onX has created a thriving distributed workforce community across several US locations. This position can be performed from an onX corporate office, “Basecamp,” or “Connection Hub.” 

  • Corporate Offices: onX was founded in Montana with offices in Missoula and Bozeman. If you prefer to work in an office at least part of the time this is a great option.
  • Basecamps: Basecamps are established virtual workforce communities where a sizable number of distributed team members group for work, volunteering, socializing, and adventure.  
    • Our current Basecamps are located within a 90-mile radius of the following: Austin, TX; Charlotte, NC; Denver, CO; Kalispell, MT; Minneapolis, MN; Portland, OR; Salt Lake City, UT; and Seattle, WA. 
  • Connection Hubs: Connection Hub locations are smaller, emerging communities of distributed team members. 
    • Our current Connection Hubs are located within a 60-mile radius of the following: Boise, ID; Charleston, SC; Dallas/Fort Worth, TX; Phoenix, AZ; Richmond, VA; Spokane, WA; and Vermont.

TECHNOLOGIES WE USE

Swift, XCUI Test, Kotlin, JavaScript, Java, Git / GitHub Actions for CI, Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Docker, Cypress, Charles Proxy, Jira, Firebase, Google Play Store, Testflight, and App Store Connect

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field; or in place of a degree, an additional three (3) or more years of relevant experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience as a tester or SDET (individual contributor).
  • A minimum of 5 years experience managing SDETs, testers or Software Developers, including hiring and performance management.
  • Proven ability to effectively balance short and long-term priorities
  • Proven ability to prioritize projects using data and experience as guides. Skilled in test data strategy, test environment management, and use of analytics to improve test effectiveness and reduce flakiness.
  • Proven ability to drive results and broadcast those results
  • Experience building and managing teams that built test automation frameworks (mobile, web and/or API) including the CI/CD pipelines to run the tests. Advanced expertise in GitHub Actions and CI/CD pipelines, including custom workflows, deployment pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code for testing environments.
  • Experience testing and managing teams that tested lower-level software systems- libraries, modules, services- including load and performance testing.
  • Proven ability to establish, document and communicate processes and goals
  • The ability to effectively juggle and prioritize competing demands from various stakeholders in an organization.
  • A passion for making testing more effective and efficient through the use of automation and tools.
  • Customer advocacy mindset
  • A belief that quality is critical to a software company’s success
  • Demonstrated track record of technical leadership and innovation in complex projects.
  • Knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and their practical applications in solving real-world problems.
  • Commitment to best practices in software engineering, including agile development, code reviews, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) processes.
  • Excellent communication and mentorship skills, with a passion for sharing knowledge and fostering development within a diverse team. You care deeply about fostering an environment where people of all backgrounds and experiences can flourish.
  • You are capable of formulating and executing strategies to increase scalability, efficiency, and effectiveness of quality practices.
  • Permanent US work authorization is a condition of employment with onX.
  • Ability to travel bi-annually for multiple days to a corporate office or other onX strategic location, such as a Basecamp.

COMPENSATION

onX is committed to compensating all employees fairly and equitably for their contributions. For this position, applicants can expect to make between $150,000 to $188,000 upon hire. The pay range will vary based on experience, skills, certifications, and education among other factors as required in the job description. In addition, full-time onX employees are eligible for a grant of common share options with a vesting schedule and a potential annual bonus of 10% based on company performance.
