Engineering Business Unit Overview: 
The charter for Engineering group at Oportun is to be the world-class engineering force behind our innovative products. The group plays a vital role in designing, developing, and maintaining cutting-edge software solutions that power our mission and advance) our business. We strike a balance between leveraging leading tools and developing in-house solutions to create member experiences that empower  their financial independence.
The talented engineers in this group are dedicated to delivering and maintaining performant, elegant, and intuitive systems to our business partners and retail members. Our platform combines service-oriented platform features with sophisticated user experience and is enabled through a best-in-class (and fun to use!) automated development infrastructure. Engineering at Oportun is responsible for high quality and scalable technical execution to achieve business goals and product vision. They ensure business continuity to members by effectively managing systems and services - overseeing technical architectures and system health. In addition, they are responsible for identifying and executing on the technical roadmap that enables product vision as well as fosters member & business growth in a scalable and efficient manner.
 
Position Overview:
The Senior Engineering Manager is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing and guiding engineering teams to deliver high-quality, innovative software solutions. This position involves managing technical projects, driving engineering best practices, and fostering a collaborative team environment. The Senior Engineering Manager will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product management and design, to align engineering efforts with business goals and drive successful project outcomes. The Senior Engineering Manager plays a critical role in driving the success of engineering initiatives, ensuring that projects are executed efficiently and that the team remains motivated and aligned with company objectives.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Lead, mentor, and develop engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
    • Set clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and conduct performance reviews to support team growth and development.
    • Ensure the teams have the resources, tools, and support needed to deliver on their goals.
    • Define and drive the technical strategy and architecture, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
    • Oversee the development and implementation of engineering best practices, coding standards, and processes.
    • Ensure the quality, scalability, and security of the solutions delivered by the teams.
    • Work closely with product management and other stakeholders to define project scope, timelines, and deliverables.
    • Coordinate and prioritize work across teams to meet project deadlines and business goals.
    • Track progress and adjust plans as necessary to ensure successful project delivery.
    • Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
    • Collaborate with other departments, such as Product, Design, and Operations, to ensure cohesive and effective product development.
    • Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs.
    • Facilitate communication between engineering teams and other stakeholders, ensuring alignment and addressing any concerns.
    • Drive the recruitment process to attract and retain top engineering talent.
    • Develop onboarding programs and continuous learning opportunities to ensure team members' professional growth.
    • Create a diverse and inclusive work environment where all team members feel valued and supported.
    • Identify areas for process improvements and implement changes to increase efficiency and productivity.
    • Provide regular updates and reports on the progress, challenges, and successes of engineering initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS
    • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
    • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.
    • Proven track record of managing and scaling engineering teams.
    • Strong understanding of software development processes, tools, and technologies.
    • Experience with cloud platforms, microservices architecture, and DevOps practices.
    • Excellent leadership, mentorship, and team-building abilities.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

 

"The US base salary range for this full-time position is $160,200 - $256,300.

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects a national minimum and maximum range for new hire salaries for this position. Within this range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
