Position Purpose:
The Lead Surgical Assistant supports surgeons during surgical procedures by anticipating the needs of the surgical team, ensuring a sterile environment, and providing mentorship to other surgical assistants. They provide expert assistance in complex surgeries and contribute to the overall coordination and efficiency of the operating room.
Responsibilities:
Preoperative Duties:
- Take panoramic x-rays & 3D scans.
- Ensure anesthesia prep has been successfully completed.
- Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Ensure all equipment is functioning correctly before procedures.
- Verify patient identity, surgical site, and procedure with the surgical team.
- Assist in positioning patients for surgery.
Intraoperative Duties:
- Assist the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during surgery.
- Maintain a sterile field throughout the procedure.
- Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and have necessary instruments ready.
- Monitor the patient’s vital signs.
Postoperative Duties:
- Explain post-operative care to patients.
- Apply dressings to surgical wounds.
- Assist in transferring patients to the recovery room.
Mentorship Duties:
- Train junior surgical assistants and support staff.
- Answer questions and mentor the surgical team.
- As needed, assist in managing the schedule of the surgical team.
- Ensure compliance with policies, safety regulations, and infection control protocols.
Administrative Duties:
- Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, patient information, and equipment use.
- Participate in clinical team meetings and contribute to the improvement of clinical services.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless patient care.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a surgical assistant, with a proven track record stepping up as a leader.
Performance Requirements:
Skills:
- Proficient in surgical techniques and procedures.
- Strong knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and make quick, effective decisions.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Commitment to maintaining a sterile environment and adhering to safety protocols.
- Positive attitude, change advocate, able to lead by example
Work environment/Conditions:
- Fast-paced dental office environment
- Overtime is sometimes required as needed to perform job functions
- Ability to stand for long periods.
- Manual dexterity to handle instruments and equipment.
- Good physical stamina and strength to assist in patient positioning and lifting.
- Operating room environment with exposure to sterile procedures.
