Head of Growth Marketing

Head of Growth Marketing

Are you a Marketing leader looking to make a big impact on a mission-driven company? Are you looking to join a small team operating a category-leading product already used by millions of people?

Propel is on a mission to empower low-income Americans by simplifying access to government benefits with modern technology. We’re looking to bring on our first Head of Growth Marketing to grow our user base. This person will report directly to Jimmy Chen, the Co-Founder and CEO.

This role goes beyond traditional marketing. We need a strategic leader with a proven track record in mobile app acquisition and growth marketing, someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and possesses a deep understanding of user needs and driving user behaviors. We’re looking for a creative marketer who can identify innovative growth levers and leverage content to drive top-of-funnel engagement, while also executing smart LCM & retention tactics.  This is an exciting opportunity for a marketer who considers themselves a strong left- and right-brained thinker, capable of thinking outside the box to differentiate the Propel brand.

Here's how you'll impact the company:

Own user acquisition. Create the strategy, generate excitement, and operate the systems to grow Propel’s user base. This includes managing our paid marketing budget, product-led growth initiatives, viral growth, and more.

  • Operate our SEO strategy. Bring expertise in SEO tactics and strategy to partner effectively with our policy and product teams on creating authoritative, first-class content around government benefits that makes the internet a better source of answers for this domain, while achieving Propel’s business goals.
  • Partner in Propel’s brand and storytelling. Have ownership in our brand and positioning, and lead efforts to understand customer responses and enhance storytelling.
  • Manage the growth marketing team at Propel. You will inherit a team of two scrappy, talented marketers. You will be responsible for the direction, growth, and success of that team.
  • Evangelize growth marketing at Propel. Foster a data-driven, results-oriented approach to growth. Become a trusted leader and advisor for functions like design, product, and business development.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of growth and user acquisition experience, with heavy emphasis on consumer mobile apps used by millions of people across Android, iOS, and mobile web
  • Experience in SEO and content marketing, with deep specific knowledge of SEO trends and best practices
  • 3+ years of experience managing a team
  • Proven track record of driving results. You’ve improved user acquisition (and retention) multiple times and can speak to the results you’ve driven
  • Deep data skillset. Proficient in SQL. Experience working with modern analytics tools like Metabase, Amplitude, Snowflake
  • Familiar with consumer mobile metrics - what are average vs industry-leading DAU/MAU ratios across different product categories? What is an average vs industry-leading D1 retention rate?
  • Comfortable being fully hands-on with any problem
  • Excited to contribute to Propel’s mission - creating a better,  more useful internet for low-income Americans
  • A big plus, but not required: expertise marketing to low-income Americans. Could be from a previous role or from personal lived experience

At Propel, you'll enjoy:

  • Meaningful work and a strong shared sense of mission
  • Remote-friendly work environment, headquartered in Downtown Brooklyn and satellite offices in San Francisco and Salt Lake City. The team meets in-person for optional retreats
  • 20 Days of PTO
  • 4% 401K match
  • $10k lifetime spend towards Carrot Fertility
  • Excellent Medical, Dental and Vision options
  • Free access to Ginger mental health, Gympass, Headspace, One Medical, Rightway, Sofi, and Spring Health
  • Propel builds compensation bands referencing the 75th percentile of compensation for companies like us. Expected compensation for the role as scoped is $210,000 - $275,000 and will be based on how a candidate matches to our internal leveling guide. Bands may be expanded if someone is leveled more senior than the role was initially scoped.

  • We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team, and welcome applicants from all backgrounds and abilities.
  • We're currently prioritizing applications from the states we have an established entity, which includes California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. We will consider highly qualified candidates from other states.

More About Propel

We believe that Americans with limited income deserve modern, respectful, and effective experiences around their government benefits and money. Unfortunately, the status quo often fails to treat them as first-class citizens in their daily interactions around the social safety net and financial services. The tech industry hasn’t pulled its weight in solving the problems faced by low-income Americans.

Propel’s mission is to change that. Propel (propel.app) is the single most popular app in the country built specifically for low-income Americans. Over 5 million families each month use Propel to seamlessly manage their government benefits (programs like SNAP, commonly known as food stamps), conduct their banking, and save and earn money. Providers has been recognized by the White House, featured on the front page of the NYTimes, and carries over 500,000 five star reviews.

Propel is a for-profit, venture-backed company that holds its social mission at its core. We’re proud to be supported by a blend of nonprofits, impact investors, and world-class investors, including the Robin Hood Foundation, Andreessen Horowitz, Nyca Partners, Financial Health Network, JPMorganChase, Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, and Nas.

Join us, and let's build something amazing together!

Demographic Questions

At Propel, we believe that an environment that is diverse, inclusive, and equitable drives us towards the best product and business decisions that allow us to effectively and consciously serve our mission and our users. As a social enterprise, we also recognize that caring about DEI is quite simply the right thing to do.

The people that use our products are diverse in many ways - gender, age, race, sexual orientation, religion, disability status, and more. We explicitly aim to reflect that with our team composition, though we aren’t there yet. That’s why we are actively working to make sure our job descriptions are inclusive, our sourcing nets are widely cast, and our interview process is equitable and fair to all.

We particularly value those with lived experiences around financial hardship and safety net programs. While people from all backgrounds can contribute to Propel’s mission, we know that those who come from the communities we serve have an incredibly powerful and unique perspective.

Your responses will be used (in aggregate only) to help us identify areas of improvement in our process. Your responses will not be associated with your specific application and will not in any way be used in the hiring decision.
