The People Management Unit (PMU), under MSF USA, is responsible for the creation and deployment of programs that reinforce MSF’s operational approach to team management and support the development and growth of managers and supervisors based in field operations and headquarter locations.

The WoW (Ways of Working) is a training program that focus on improving essential management practices and ensuring the consistent application of MSF management tools and approaches. WoW trainings are designed to contribute to the participants’ professional development and prepare them for advancement into more senior roles while also contributing to the overall operational success of MSF projects. WoW courses are highly participatory programs designed for staff who supervise, manage, and collaborate with individuals and/or teams. WoW training programs are open to international and national staff members in a field project or HQ role who currently supervise MSF staff. If appropriate, managers from other MSF sections or from partners critical to a project’s success, such as the Ministry of Health (MoH), may also attend the training.

 

There are several WoW training programs which all use 2 different delivery formats as follows:

Key job responsibilities

 

Ways of Working (WoW) Facilitators report to the WoW Program Manager.

As a member of a WoW Facilitation Team, a WoW Facilitator is responsible for managing and delivering the comprehensive WoW curriculum, co-facilitating assigned WoW training courses, and providing support to participants throughout the course. The overall objectives of a WoW Facilitator are to:

 

  • Ensure familiarity with WoW Program objectives, philosophy, methodology, content, and
  • Deliver WoW content and facilitate interactive discussions and activities as designed by the
  • Reinforce key operational management messages and encourage consistent application of management tools.
  • Role model behaviors consistent with WoW training content and show links between desired management behaviors and approaches to team management and the practical application of such behaviors and management tools.
  • Support participants in their continuous learning by providing guidance to individual participants as needed and communicating with and engaging in interactive discussions with participants as a group outside of scheduled virtual sessions.
  • Provide feedback on course content and complete course
  • Experienced WoW Facilitators will role model facilitation best practices and provide support and direction to new WoW Facilitation Team members.
  • Attends meetings and learning events to gain information and skills applicable, pre-course briefings with various actors to confirm project details, expectations for training, and essential PMU and other training messages.
  • Report to the WoW program manager, participants list, schedule, attendance review, regular feedback and debriefing.
  • Work in sync with co-facilitators, and technical producers, in the event of virtual courses, for maximum output of course delivery in terms of learning content and environment.

 

Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

 

This position requires the flexibility to travel to foreign countries to work onsite at the project level at times, and at other times to work remotely from your home. While onsite at an MSF project location, the WoW facilitator may be exposed to precarious settings under high security and/or very basic living conditions. When facilitating remotely from home, the WoW facilitator will require high-speed internet and a space to work uninterrupted and with high focus for hours at a time.

 

The working hours of the position vary based on the scheduling of the WoW courses. This often requires WoW Facilitators to work outside of traditional “office hours” and to be flexible and available to work according to the scheduled times for all the weeks of the assigned WoW course.

 

Conditions of Employment

 

Qualified applicants will pass through a rigorous recruitment process compromising a mix of assessment methods. After the recruitment process, qualified candidates shall take part in a weeklong Training of Facilitators (ToF) course which will be organized face to face in Mexico City and once successfully completed the ToF they become part of the Facilitation Team Pool in PMU. That means the staff can be a facilitator of WoW Programs. However, being part of the pool will not guarantee an automatic or continuous assignment/matching to a facilitation role.

 

A pool member who is assigned to a facilitation role will receive a short-term contract covering the period of the WoW course. The contract is issued by the applicable MSF office, on behalf of PMU, applicable to the location of the staff. A consultant contract can be issued if the facilitator is found in a country where any of MSF offices could not manage (reach) to contract an employee. Remuneration of the role basis the job level, duration and type of the contract and weekly duty hours.

 

If the selected persons are currently under contract with MSF, the facilitation will require around 2 to 3 weeks off from your regular position. To keep continuity and not leave your regular job, a detachment mechanism is possible.

 

Key Competencies

 

A WoW Facilitator must have previous team management and humanitarian experience, preferably with MSF in the field. WoW Facilitators must have a good understanding of MSF’s operations, policies and issues and must be able to provide examples of management practice from personal experience. WoW Facilitators must also be comfortable explaining the theory behind each topic and providing practical and relevant examples.

WoW Facilitator should be available to facilitate multiple courses over a period of 3 years (can be under detachment mechanism if already under MSF contract).

 

Essential Qualifications

 

All WoW Facilitators must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be culturally sensitive, at ease working with a diverse range of group dynamics, as well as:

  • Able to clearly summarize complex concepts and absorb and process information on a range of topics presented in a variety of formats.
  • Able to promote participative discussions and learning, encouraging respectful expression and debate from differing opinions.
  • Be a skilled and engaging public speaker and active listener, able to ask effective
  • Capable of modeling MSF’s principles and have a good understanding of MSF’s operations, policies, and issues.
  • Confident adapting learning activities to suit a wide range of training
  • Confident leading and demonstrating creative, non-traditional learning
  • Have knowledge and practical experience applying adult learning
  • Self-aware and able to exhibit self-
  • Computer literate and able to master the software programs and applications used to facilitate wow courses, including Microsoft office suite, Microsoft teams, mural and other platforms.

 

Required Experience

WoW Facilitators

  • 2+ years MSF field experience, at Manager or coordination level and ideally in different
  • Knowledge of general management practices and the humanitarian sector (ALL profiles in MSF= Ops, Med, Paramed, Log/ Supply, HR/FIN/Admin, etc…)
  • Experience facilitating a WoW course (or Field Management Training -FMT-/ People Management Training -PMT-) or other courses. Or have attended the WoW or PMT/FMT course as a participant.
  • English and Spanish are compulsory (C1 level for both) and professional fluency in French language is a plus.

The selected candidates will be invited to join the TOF WOW 1 onsite at Mexico City in Q1-2025.

Travel & accommodation costs are very limited for those who are not under MSF contract in the Region. Once selected candidates are identified, cost sharing between MSF & the participant without actual MSF contract will be needed.
