About this role:

As a Senior Database Administrator, you will be responsible for managing high-availability database systems in support of the IRS Linux Migration Initiative. This role focuses on PostgreSQL and Redis database administration and configuration within highly secure federal environments. You will provide expertise on database architecture and ensure system stability, performance, and security.

In this role, you will work with the Server Support and Services Division (SSSD) to support federal system upgrades and maintain operational continuity for mission-critical IRS services. Your role will require hands-on technical skills combined with the ability to work with cross-functional teams to meet project objectives and ensure federal compliance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage and maintain high-availability PostgreSQL databases, ensuring reliability and data integrity across development, testing, and production environments.
  • Oversee Redis cluster configuration and administration for high availability, ensuring smooth performance and minimal downtime.
  • Collaborate with federal stakeholders and technical teams to optimize database performance and troubleshoot issues.
  • Support database migration efforts as part of the IRS Linux Migration Initiative, ensuring seamless transitions from legacy systems.
  • Ensure compliance with federal security standards such as NIST, FISMA, and IRS-specific policies.
  • Provide support for the OpenShift Container Platform to manage database instances running in containerized environments.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for database configurations, security protocols, and operational procedures.
  • Monitor system performance, manage capacity planning, and ensure disaster recovery plans are in place and tested.
Required Skills / Education / Certifications & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience administering PostgreSQL databases in a high-availability environment.
  • Experience with Redis in a production environment, including cluster configuration and management.
  • Familiarity with OpenShift or other container platforms.
  • Strong experience in troubleshooting and performance tuning of PostgreSQL and Redis databases.
  • Scripting skills (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation of database maintenance and monitoring tasks.
Desired Skills:
  • Knowledge of AWS and cloud-based database solutions such as RDS for PostgreSQL.
  • Experience working with Ansible or Terraform for automated deployment and management of database systems.
  • Familiarity with FedRAMP and NIST 800-53 compliance requirements.
  • Experience with containerized applications in a Kubernetes or Docker environment.
  • Experience leading database migration projects in a federal setting.

  • Communication: Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with government stakeholders and technical teams, ensuring smooth MQ integration and operations.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex messaging issues in a secure, mission-critical environment.

  • Leadership: Ability to lead MQ infrastructure projects and mentor junior staff in MQ administration best practices.
