As the first dedicated Compensation hire at Relay, you won’t just be managing a process; you will be the architect of our total rewards ecosystem. You will serve as a strategic advisor to our CEO and SVP of People Services, translating our business goals into a sophisticated compensation philosophy.

This is a "player-coach" IC role. You will be expected to dive deep into the data for one hour and present a multi-year equity strategy to the executive team the next. As we scale, you will have the opportunity to build and lead the Compensation function.

What You Will Do

Strategy & Architectural Design

  • Partner directly with the CEO and SVP of People Services to design, implement, and evolve Relay’s global compensation philosophy.
  • Build a scalable job architecture, a leveling matrix, and a career progression framework that reflect our high-growth trajectory.
  • Lead the strategy for equity compensation (stock options/RSUs), ensuring our long-term incentives are competitive and understood by all team members.
  • Partner with Finance and Sales Leadership to architect and refine commission structures that drive high performance and align with company ARR goals.

Strategic Execution & Insights

  • Own the end-to-end execution of bi-annual compensation reviews, including base pay, bonus pools, and equity grants.
  • Go beyond standard benchmarking. Use data from Radford, Pave, and Mercer to provide "forward-looking" insights that keep Relay ahead of the tech talent market.
  • Proactively audit and manage internal pay equity, ensuring Relay remains a leader in fair and transparent compensation practices.

Consultation & Influence

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for Recruiters and People Business Partners on complex offers, retention strategies, and counter-offers.
  • Create and lead educational programs for managers and employees to demystify compensation, equity, and the "why" behind our rewards.
  • Evaluate and implement a compensation "tech stack" (e.g., Lattice, Pave) to automate workflows and provide real-time data visibility.

What You Will Bring

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in Compensation or Total Rewards, with at least 3 years in a high-growth SaaS or hardware technology environment.
  • You thrive in ambiguity. You enjoy building things from scratch rather than just following an existing playbook.
  • You have a "FinTech" mindset. Advanced Excel/Google Sheets skills are a baseline; you should be able to model complex equity dilution and budget impact scenarios with ease.
  • You can distill complex financial concepts into a compelling narrative for the CEO, Board of Directors, or a new hire.
  • You understand how a P&L works. You don’t just look at HR metrics; you look at how compensation drives business outcomes.
  • The ability to influence at the C-suite level while maintaining the empathy required to support individual employee needs.

Bonus Points For:

  • FP&A Background: Experience working in or closely with Finance/Accounting.
  • Hardware/Software Mix: Experience benchmarking for both hardware engineering and SaaS sales roles.
  • Certifications: CCP (Certified Compensation Professional) or CEP (Certified Equity Professional).
  • Scale Experience: You’ve seen the "movie" before—navigating a company from 200 to 1,000+ employees.
