Ready to help us build the Intelligent System of Action?
Join us in Raleigh and let’s get LIT.
About Relay
For decades, enterprise technology has focused on the 20% of workers sitting behind desks, while the 80% who power the physical economy have been left behind in an analog void. Relay is fixing the "Operational Black Hole" by providing an Intelligent System of Action (SOAR) that connects frontline teams. We are replacing disconnected, legacy radios with rugged, AI-powered smart devices that run on our patented Steady Link™ network, allowing teams to communicate, stay safe, and turn voice into operational data.
As we rapidly scale and expand our enterprise footprint across Manufacturing, Steel, Food & Beverage, and Logistics, we need a technical leader to quarterback our most massive and complex physical rollouts.
The Role: Your Mission
As a Deployment Systems Engineer (DSE), you are the technical quarterback for Relay’s largest enterprise deployments. When an enterprise customer purchases thousands of Relay devices for a multi-site rollout, you own the physical and network reality of making that deployment successful.
You sit within our Solutions organization alongside Solutions Engineers (SE) and Forward Deployed Engineers (FDE). While the SE secures the technical win, and the FDE writes the code for complex SCADA/API integrations, you orchestrate the system. You will ensure the customer's facility has the right power load, charging infrastructure, and network capacity to support our devices, and you will coordinate the exact timing of hardware delivery and software integration.
Key Responsibilities
- Quarterback Enterprise Deployments: Act as the primary technical project leader from the moment a massive deal closes to the moment the devices are powered, connected, deployed at the customer. You are responsible for handing off from Solutions Engineering, coordinating activities with Customer Success, and developing an implementation plan for Forward Deployed Engineering.
- Infrastructure & Network Engineering: Conduct site audits to ensure the customer's IT and physical infrastructure is ready. You will assess Wi-Fi and cellular network capacity for Relay's Steady Link™ technology (simultaneous redundant Cell + Wi-Fi connectivity), manage firewall configurations, and calculate the electrical amperage and power drop requirements for installing massive charging stations.
- Direct Technical Resources: Identify when custom software development is required (e.g., integrating Relay with a customer's ERP or IoT sensors) and deploy our Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) to execute the coding, ensuring their work aligns with the physical rollout timeline.
- Hardware Logistics & Staging: Coordinate with our Supply Chain team to ensure thousands of MIL-STD 810H, IP68/69K devices are provisioned, staged, and shipped to meet our 48-hour operational SLAs.
- Build the Onboarding Center of Excellence (CoE): Play a foundational role in building our Onboarding CoE. You will create repeatable technical deployment playbooks that optimize Time-to-Value (TTV) and lower COGS across diverse segments like Steel, Specialty Logistics, and Hospitality.
Who You Are / What You'll Need
- Technical Systems Expertise: You have a deep understanding of enterprise networking (Wi-Fi 6, Cellular Systems (DAS, Private and Public Wireless), RF propagation, MAC whitelisting, firewall rules) and physical facility infrastructure (power loads, low-voltage cabling).
- The Quarterback Mindset: You are a master of logistics and project management. You can look at a complex deployment involving hardware manufacturing, software integration, and physical construction, and align all moving parts to a single "Go-Live" date.
- Executive Presence: You are comfortable putting on a hard hat to walk a steel mill with a Plant Manager, and equally comfortable sitting in a boardroom talking security protocols with an IT leader.
- Hardware / IoT Experience: Previous experience deploying physical hardware, AV equipment, enterprise networking gear, or IoT sensors at a massive scale.
- Cross-Functional Fluency: You know how to draw clear boundaries. You know when a problem requires an FDE (software/code) vs. when it requires CS (user adoption and workflow training).
- Willingness to Travel: This role requires being on the ground at massive industrial and hospitality sites to ensure technical readiness, with 75% travel.
- Minimum of 3 years professional experience in a fast-paced environment.
How this role fits into the Relay Engine:
- Solutions Engineers (SEs) architect the deal in the pre-sales phase.
- Deployment Systems Engineers (DSEs) own the physical and network infrastructure rollout, ensuring the site is ready.
- Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) write the custom integrations (directed by the DSE during deployment, or embedded long-term).
- Enterprise Support (ES) sit with Product Engineering and handle complex technical issues that arise with customers.
Customer Success (CS) Onboarding Managers coordinate with DSE to train the frontline workers and shift supervisors on how to actually use the software and own the long term success post onboarding.
