Why This Role Matters

As a Platform Tech Lead at ROLLER, you will play a key role in guiding engineers within our Platform squad, partnering closely with the Product Manager and Designer as part of the Product Trio to deliver high-quality, scalable platform capabilities that enable engineers across the company.

In this role, you will combine strong technical leadership with hands-on engineering, contributing directly to the codebase while helping shape the technical direction of the platform. The Platform team focuses on building the foundations that empower product teams, improve developer velocity, and unlock impact across the entire engineering organisation. This includes driving modern engineering practices and exploring opportunities to leverage AI and automation to enhance how we build and operate software.

You’ll support and mentor engineers on your team, fostering strong engineering practices while ensuring we deliver reliable, scalable systems. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, enabling other engineers to move faster, and raising the bar for engineering excellence.

Like all engineering roles at ROLLER, this position follows a hybrid work model: 3 days per week in our office located South Melbourne office, with the flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the week. Many of our engineers also choose to spend additional time in the office to collaborate and connect with the team in person.

 

What You'll Do

  • Lead and Coach: Provide day-to-day leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to the engineers in your squad, ensuring they grow and succeed in their roles.
  • Own Squad Delivery: Collaborate within the Trio to prioritise work, manage technical scope, and ensure timely, high-quality delivery of product outcomes.
  • Be Hands-On: Actively contribute to the codebase, designing, building, reviewing, and deploying features, primarily using C#, T-SQL/SQL Server, and AWS.
  • Champion Engineering Excellence: Promote engineering best practices, including test-driven development, CI/CD, and system observability.
  • Foster Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Design, Product, and other squads, to deliver customer-focused solutions.

 

About You

  • 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, including time spent in a leadership or mentorship capacity.
  • Strong experience with C# .NET / Web API, SQL Server, and T-SQL optimisation.
  • Solid understanding of modern software architecture and designing for scalability and high availability.
  • Confident working with AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, and SQS.
  • Comfortable managing CI/CD pipelines and promoting DevOps culture and practices.
  • Experienced in leading or coaching a team in an agile environment, ideally within a Trio setup.
  • You are people-focused: skilled at building rapport, giving feedback, and growing others through coaching and support.
  • Passionate about quality, security, and performance in software systems.
  • A clear communicator who thrives on collaboration and transparency.
  • You have a high appetite for Technology and AI and a natural curiosity for how it can transform your work. You’re comfortable using AI tools to automate repetitive 'busy work,' freeing you up to focus on high-impact work.
  • You value continuous learning and actively encourage knowledge sharing within your team.
