Our growth includes recent acquisitions of Stessa (financial and asset management software), RentPrep (tenant screening and placement service for landlords), and Mynd (property management platform for both Retail and Institutional investors).
Corporate accounting’s mission is to create value to the Company through integrity, leadership and business partnership. Our primary responsibility is to prepare and report the consolidated financial statements to senior management and to enhance the Company in making informative business decisions.
About the Role
The Assistant Controller will be the right-hand person for the Controller and is responsible for overseeing various day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, stock administration, A/P, cash management, audits, and ad hoc projects.
Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting
- Prepare and oversee the preparation of financial statements in compliance with GAAP/IFRS.
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
- Analyze actuals to forecast variances and provide insights into differences
- General Ledger and Accounting Operations:
- Assist in managing the various accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger.
- Ensure accurate and timely processing of all accounting transactions.
- Establish SLAs for vendor payments and track AP turnaround time
- Internal Controls:
- Develop and implement robust internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Assist with establishing accounting policies and procedures, and monitor compliance.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all financial regulations, tax laws, and reporting requirements.
- Coordinate audits and address any findings or recommendations.
- Cash Management:
- Oversee cash flow management, including forecasting and optimizing liquidity.
- Manage banking relationships and debt service payments.
- Stock Administration:
- Work with the legal team to properly account for the company’s stock plan.
- Manage and reconcile stock grants, vesting, forfeitures, etc. in Carta.
- Coordinate periodic 409A valuations.
- Assist with stock based compensation accounting.
- Team Leadership:
- Supervise and mentor direct reports and their related team, fostering a culture of collaboration and professional development.
- Conduct performance evaluations and identify training needs.
- Strategic Partnership:
- Collaborate with other departments to provide financial insights that support strategic initiatives.
- Participate in strategic planning and contribute to organizational growth.
- Special Projects:
- Assist the Controller and CFO with ad hoc projects as needed.
- Identify process improvement opportunities and implement enhancements.
- Assess automation needs and work with Product, Data, & Engineering to help the accounting team function more efficiently.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 10+ years of experience in accounting and financial management.
- 3+ years minimum experience in a supervisory role.
- Big 4 or other public accounting experience.
- Prior experience as an Assistant Controller or Director of Accounting.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP/IFRS) and financial regulations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and accounting ERP systems (e.g., Netsuite or equivalent).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
- Team player who’s willing to jump in wherever needed.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and a fast work environment.
- Adaptable and flexible to pivot as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or CMA preferred.
- Prior real estate accounting experience is a plus.
Location
This position is classified as HYBRID within the Greater Oakland Area with an expectation to be in-office on Tuesdays and Thursdays weekly.

Compensation
$160,000 - $190,000 annual salary. The compensation range may be adjusted based on experience and location.
Pay Transparency
Our compensation reflects several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position represents the expected salary for this position. Ultimately, in determining your pay it will be based on several factors including location, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and other job related factors. Roofstock is a total compensation company; the base salary is only a part of our total compensation package.
