Product Safety & Compliance Manager

Global Product Compliance – Household Appliances & Medical devices

Our mission to positively impact people's lives every day in every home around the world allows our employees to be thinkers and tinkerers, designers and doers, makers of things they love. As we grow, we are excited to add a Product Safety & Compliance Manager to our global team.

Overview

We are looking for a highly organized, dynamic leader to join our product development teams, ensuring every new design is safe, meets retailer requirements, and complies with the laws and regulations of the countries where it is sold. You will partner across the organizations: Design and Electrical Engineering, Marketing, Supply Chain, Industrial Design, Quality, Manufacturing, Legal, and Senior Executives — and with external certification and test agencies (NRTLs, Notified Bodies), suppliers, factories, and distributors. You will lead a team of compliance engineers across a portfolio spanning household appliances and medical and wellness devices.

What You'll Do

  • Lead certification planning for new product designs across all target markets (Americas, EU, UK, and rest of world).
  • Communicate at all levels: translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable guidance for audiences from design engineers to Senior Executives, and present executive updates on NPD compliance status and risks.
  • Hold the line on product safety: serve as the firm voice of safety in program decisions, pushing back when designs or schedules put compliance at risk while always offering a practical path forward.
  • Apply AI to compliance work: use AI tools to accelerate standards research, regulatory documentation, technical file preparation, and project tracking, ensuring all AI-assisted output is validated by qualified engineering review.
  • Manage and conduct design and construction reviews for risk analysis and mitigation; participate in and facilitate DFMEA activities.
  • Project-manage safety and compliance activities: define deliverables, own certification timelines and lab resources, and keep concurrent NPD programs on schedule through stage gates.
  • Lead identification and communication of market access requirements and serve as lead for international product extensions (EU, UK, and rest-of-world programs).
  • Evaluate marketplace and consumer events for safety risks; design and drive team participation in market surveillance and post-market activities.
  • Act as principal approver for safety, compliance, and marketing collateral (manuals, rating labels, packaging claims).
  • Manage and coach direct reports to continuously drive high performance; participate in global talent development programs.
  • Represent the company in standards development committees and trade associations.
  • Hybrid role: 3 days per week onsite at our Needham, MA headquarters; 10–15% travel.

Standards & Regulations You'll Work With

  • Household appliances – safety: IEC/UL/CSA 60335-1 and applicable Part 2 standards for our product categories (e.g., vacuums, kitchen and cooking appliances, liquid-heating appliances, skin and hair care, fans and air treatment), plus legacy UL standards where applicable (e.g., UL 1017, UL 982, UL 1026, UL 859, UL 507).
  • Medical and wellness devices: IEC 60601-1 and applicable collateral standards (incl. IEC 60601-1-2 EMC and IEC 60601-1-11 home healthcare), ISO 14971 risk management, ISO 13485, IEC 62366-1 usability, FDA 510(k) pathways, 21 CFR Part 820, and EU MDR 2017/745.
  • EMC and radio: FCC Part 15/18, CISPR 14-1/14-2, and RED/wireless requirements for connected products.
  • Multi-market certification schemes: NRTL (cULus), CE marking (LVD, EMC, RoHS), UKCA, CB Scheme, NOM (Mexico), CCC (China), and applicable energy efficiency regulations (DOE, ErP).
  • Chemical, environmental, and food contact: RoHS, REACH, California Proposition 65, and food-contact material requirements (FDA 21 CFR, EU 1935/2004) for kitchen products.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical preferred, or a related engineering discipline). An engineering degree is a firm requirement for this role.
  • 5+ years of compliance or design experience with consumer, commercial, or medical electromechanical products, including hands-on experience taking products through agency evaluation (NRTL, CB, Notified Body) from concept to production.
  • Experience supervising engineering or test personnel.
  • Working knowledge of the standards and regulations listed above, or directly transferable industry experience.
  • Experience facilitating or participating in DFMEA sessions.
  • AI literacy: demonstrated use of AI tools in a professional workflow, with sound judgment about verifying AI-generated output before it enters compliance records.

Who You Are

  • Highly organized and detail-driven: you track status across many concurrent projects, keep documentation audit-ready, and never let certification milestones or design changes slip.
  • A communicator at every level: equally effective explaining a creepage-distance issue to a design engineer, a certification risk to a program manager, and a portfolio-level compliance position to senior executives.
  • Firm on safety, focused on resolution: you stand your ground under program pressure and bring a proposed solution to every escalation — compromising on approach, never on safety.
  • AI-forward: you embrace new tools, integrate AI into your team's daily work, and coach others to use it well — critically, efficiently, and with engineering rigor.
  • A people leader: you coach, develop, and hold a high bar for your team while building trust across functions.
  • Comfortable operating independently in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities, delivering creative and technically sound solutions to complex problems.
  • Analytically minded, driving continuous improvement in compliance processes, tools, and data.
