VLT Technician – Packaging

$24.50/HR - $28.55/HR

The VLT Technician will report directly to the Continuous Improvement Manager and is a key contributor to the success and reliability of the assigned are of responsibility. This role is focused on ensuring maximum throughput, identifying and resolving process and operational issues, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The technician will play a critical role in maintaining the efficiency, safety, and productivity of the line through process control, planning, and problem­ solving. 

 Essential Job Duties

  • Lead with Safety Critical Thinking and Willing to Learn Coaching 
  • Process Documentation Maintenance Connection Operations Connection Basic Troubleshooting skills Line Projects 
  • Willingness to flex schedule based on business needs 

Scope of Responsibility

  • Create/Own process documentation such as: Centerlines, Clean to Inspect, Flow Chart, Standard Work, Time Studies, Line balancing, etc.
  • Trains/Coaching operations team in area of Responsibility
    • Optix
    • Scales/Buckets
    • Baggers
    • Seal Checkers
    • ACP
    • Conveyance
    • Etc.
  • Owns Processes and partners with cross functional teams in Area of Responsibility
    • Basic Troubleshooting
    • CMMS (Maintenance Connection) ticket submission and tracking
    • Work closely with Maintenance Planning team to make sure proper work is being completed
    • Work with Sanitation to create and train to best practices
    • Data Collection and reporting to Cl Manager and Plant Director
  • Implement safety improvements and execute actions to enhance reliability
  • Drive Process improvement initiatives
  • Monitor downtime events
  • Devise solutions to mitigate future repeat unplanned downtime events
  • Participate in and contribute in SHO (Shift Hand Offs) and AOR (Area Operations Review).
    • Provide input online performance and work being completed in Area of Responsibility

Continuous Improvement & Projects:

  • Actively support and lead sections of Tiger Team Events.
  • Drive and own initiatives to achieve the following:
    • Increased Throughput
    • Un-Planned Downtime Reduction
    • Reduced Waste
    • Breakdown Elimination
    • Reduce Giveaway Qualifications and Skills:

Qualifications and Skills: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of manufacturing experience, preferred 3+ years of experience with Vertical Form Fill Machines (Baggers)
  • Willingness to learn Continuous Improvement principles and tools
  • Ability to communicate and coach others
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and operators.
  • Problem-solving mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and safety.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to take charge of Area of Responsibility and own process improvement activities

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • LOTO
  • Root Cause Problem Solving
  • Basic Data Analysis (pareto, run charts, trend charts, etc.) Coaching
  • Incident Investigation Microsoft Office

Requires attention to detail, technical ability, and ability to multi-task. Must be able to make good decisions under pressure.

Language Skills

Must be fluent in English; Must have excellent communication skills.

Mathematical Skills

Must have basic mathematical skills.

Adverse Working Conditions

Subject to indoor facility and outdoor weather conditions, dust, noise, heat/cold

Machines, Tools, or Equipment Used:

  • Product wrappers - continuously Conveyor systems - continuously Bearings, rollers, belts - continuously Oven - continuously
  • Cutter - continuously
  • Bagging Equipment – occasionally
  • Forklifts - occasionally
  • Robots – occasionally

Education and Experience: 

This position typically requires a high school education or equivalent, and 4+ years of experience in Leadership role.
