Job Summary

As the leader of the SingleStore database engine team, you will drive the technical vision and execution for our core engine, leading a high-performing, collaborative team in a rapid production environment. You will oversee the direction, design, and development of key features, working closely with cross-functional teams—including cloud managed services, infrastructure, product, and go-to-market—to deliver a robust, enterprise-ready product. You will foster a culture of innovation, learning, and operational excellence, mentoring engineers and managers, and ensuring the team iterates and innovates quickly while maintaining high quality and reliability.

 

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and grow a geographically distributed team of engineers and managers, fostering a culture of collaboration, diversity, and continuous learning.
• Define and execute the technical roadmap for the database engine, balancing short-term deliverables with long-term vision and scalability.
• Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of major software components, systems, and features, ensuring high performance, reliability, and security.
• Collaborate with product management and other stakeholders to prioritize features and align engineering efforts with business goals.
• Drive operational excellence, including observability, testing, and incident response for production systems.
• Attract, hire, and retain top engineering talent, and lead the team through periods of growth and change.
• Engage with customers and partners to gather feedback and drive adoption of new features.
• Champion best practices in software engineering, including code reviews, technical standards, and process improvements.

 

Minimum Qualifications

• Proven ability to hire, mentor, and retain top engineering talent in distributed teams.
• 5+ years of experience in a senior role leading software engineering teams, including prior experience building teams in distributed locations.
• Experience leading and developing major software components, systems, and features in distributed systems or database engines.
• Deep knowledge of file systems, concurrency, multithreading, and server architectures.
• Expertise in query optimization, execution, and processing.
• Prior experience developing and debugging in system-level C/C++, particularly on Linux.
• Strong ability to design and develop new systems to enhance database performance.
• Experience working closely with customers and partners to collect feedback and drive adoption.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a passion for building highly reliable systems software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with distributed consensus protocols, data replication, and distributed transactions.
• Familiarity with database internals or building core components for data processing systems.
• Experience with cloud-native architectures and hybrid cloud/on-prem environments.
• Track record of launching new features and maintaining them in production with high observability and operational excellence.
• Commitment to building and fostering a diverse and supportive culture.
