Sr. Software Engineer I (Remote Eligible in Bulgaria)

-REMOTE, BULGARIA-

For over 20 years, Smartsheet has empowered teams to manage work seamlessly and scale solutions smarter. Now, in our most ambitious chapter yet, we are uniting human teams with AI agents. By orchestrating the work agents do best, automating manual tasks and uncovering insights at scale, we create the space for people to focus on what truly matters: judgment, creativity, and big thinking. That is magic at work, and it’s what we show up for every day.

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our Workflow Builder pillar. In this role, you will be a key architect of our next-generation drag-and-drop workflow experience—balancing a highly interactive visual layer with the robust, scalable back-end systems that thousands of teams rely on to automate their enterprise processes.

You will work at the intersection of high-performance UI rendering, scalable API design, and distributed systems architecture. This is your opportunity to build an end-to-end product that users touch every day, deeply integrating modern React patterns, cloud-native services, and cutting-edge AI orchestration.

You will work remotely from Bulgaria and will be reporting to an engineering leader.

You Will:

Architect End-to-End Workflow Systems

  • Own, build, and iterate on the Workflow Builder across the entire stack, ensuring a seamless connection between frontend interactions and backend execution.
  • Drive system design, data modeling, and API contracts that allow our drag-and-drop editor to scale effortlessly for enterprise workloads.
  • Participate in cross-functional architectural discussions, advocating for engineering best practices across both front-end and back-end ecosystems.

Advance our Front-End Architecture

  • Build production-grade visual features using React (v18+), leveraging advanced state management, concurrent rendering, and performance tuning (virtualization, code-splitting).
  • Integrate and extend modern component libraries (e.g., MUI, Radix UI, Shadcn/ui) to ensure a consistent, highly accessible (WCAG AA) user experience.

Build Scalable and Secure Back-End Services

  • Develop high-availability, secure back-end services and microservices within our multi-cloud environment (primarily AWS).
  • Design, implement, and maintain highly performant REST or GraphQL APIs, optimizing for low latency, secure data transit, and system resilience.
  • Define and uphold coding standards, database optimization strategies, and automated testing patterns (unit, integration, and E2E) across the pillar.

Deliver High Quality at Scale

  • Monitor and optimize full-stack performance metrics—balancing frontend Core Web Vitals with backend API latency, throughput, and resource utilization.
  • Write comprehensive test suites (Jest, Cypress, Playwright, and backend integration testing frameworks) with a strong culture of test-driven development.
  • Partner closely with UX designers and Product Managers to translate complex workflows into technical realities.

Mentor & Lead

  • Serve as a technical mentor for junior and mid-level engineers, hosting code reviews and evangelizing clean code principles across the entire stack.
  • Contribute to technical roadmap planning, providing accurate effort estimations and surfacing architectural risks or tradeoffs.

Strategically Apply AI Tools

  • Champion the use of AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor, etc.) to accelerate engineering velocity and code quality.
  • Build and evaluate AI-powered features within the Workflow Builder that leverage generative AI or agentic workflows to deliver unique customer value.

You Have:

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of shipping production-grade full-stack web applications.
  • Deep experience in at least one major back-end language (such as Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python) alongside experience designing relational/non-relational databases and distributed cloud architectures (AWS).
  • Proficiency with React (v17+), TypeScript, HTML5, and modern CSS layout systems (Grid, Flexbox, Custom Properties).
  • Strong understanding of API design principles and frontend state management patterns (Redux Toolkit, Zustand, Jotai, or React Query).
  • Proven experience optimizing both backend service performance (query tuning, caching) and frontend rendering, alongside an understanding of web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA).
  • Experience writing reliable unit, integration, and end-to-end tests across the entire application stack.
  • 1+ year of professional experience leveraging AI-based workflows to author/review code, and/or building product features that incorporate generative AI/agents.
  • Legally eligible to work in Bulgaria on an ongoing basis.
  • Fluency in English is required

Nice to Have:

  • Familiarity with canvas/SVG rendering libraries (Fabric.js, Konva, React Flow) for building highly interactive workflow diagram surfaces.
  • Experience with micro-frontend architectures, module federation, or event-driven backend architectures.
  • Background in drag-and-drop UI frameworks (dnd-kit, react-beautiful-dnd) or custom graph-traversal algorithms on the backend.
  • Relevant cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer / Solutions Architect).

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
