Role Overview:
The Senior Workday Platform Engineer – Absence (P4) is responsible for owning the design, configuration, and continuous evolution of Workday Absence capabilities as part of SIE’s global People Technology platform.
This role serves as a senior technical leader within People Technology Services (PTS), with primary ownership of the Absence domain. The role is accountable for ensuring that absence-related solutions are scalable, precise, and aligned with global business requirements, while also contributing to broader Workday platform design and delivery.
The role works closely with Human Resources partners to translate policy, regulatory requirements, and business processes into scalable, system-driven solutions.
Operating within a globally consistent Agile delivery model, this role balances deep domain expertise with cross-platform contribution. The Senior Engineer partners with Product, Integration, Data, and Architecture colleagues to deliver cohesive, end-to-end solutions and to establish sustainable configuration patterns across the platform.
This role is suited for individuals who combine deep expertise in Workday Absence with strong systems thinking, technical leadership, and the ability to influence design decisions across a global platform.
What you'll be doing:
Domain Ownership & Platform Leadership (Absence)
- Own the Workday Absence domain globally, including configuration design, system behavior, and ongoing evolution
- Lead the design and implementation of complex absence solutions in partnership with Human Resources partners, ensuring alignment with policy, regulatory requirements, and operational realities, including:
- Absence plans, accrual calculations, and eligibility rules
- Leave of absence processes and event-driven workflows
- Country-specific and policy-driven configurations
- Partner directly with Human Resources to interpret policies, validate requirements, and ensure system configurations accurately reflect intended business outcomes
- Define and implement configuration design patterns that ensure scalability, reusability, and maintainability
- Act as the primary technical authority for absence-related design decisions, guiding trade-offs between business requirements, system constraints, and long-term sustainability
- Ensure alignment of absence configurations with global policies, regulatory requirements, and downstream dependencies (e.g., payroll)
Solution Design & Delivery Leadership
- Engage with Human Resources partners to clarify requirements, challenge assumptions, and guide toward scalable, platform-aligned solutions
- Lead end-to-end delivery of complex absence-related initiatives, including design, build, testing, and deployment readiness
- Translate complex business rules, policies, and regulatory requirements into structured, scalable system configurations
- Provide technical leadership across workstreams, ensuring consistency and quality of solutions delivered by the team
- Support and guide P3 analysts in solution design and configuration, ensuring alignment with platform standards
Platform Engineering & Cross-Domain Contribution
- Contribute to broader Workday platform design and configuration across additional domains (e.g., Core HCM, Compensation, Talent, Performance)
- Collaborate with Integration and Data specialists to ensure end-to-end solution integrity
- Participate in platform-level design discussions, influencing architecture, standards, and ways of working
- Ensure absence-related solutions integrate effectively with upstream and downstream systems
Data, Reporting & Downstream Integrity
- Design and supervise reporting solutions and calculated fields supporting absence and related processes
- Ensure absence data supports HR reporting, compliance, and downstream processes (e.g., payroll and analytics)
- Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and consistency across absence configurations and downstream consumers
- Validate and test complex scenarios, including edge cases across regions, policies, and lifecycle events
Platform Reliability & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure reliability and stability of absence-related processes through proactive issue identification and root cause resolution
- Identify systemic issues and drive structural improvements to platform design and configuration practices
- Lead initiatives to simplify, standardize, and improve absence-related configurations
- Contribute to evolving platform standards, governance models, and configuration frameworks
Governance, Compliance & Standards
- Ensure alignment to global PTS design standards, governance practices, and engineering principles
- Ensure absence configurations meet data privacy, security, and audit requirements
- Contribute to documentation standards, testing practices, and release management processes
What we're looking for:
- 8+ years of experience with enterprise platforms, including considerable hands-on experience with Workday
- Demonstrated expertise in designing and implementing Workday Absence solutions, including accruals, eligibility rules, and leave processes
- Ability to own and lead complex configuration domains, including defining design patterns and standards
- Strong understanding of absence-related business processes across multiple regions and regulatory contexts
- Demonstrated ability to translate sophisticated business rules and policies into scalable, maintainable system configurations
- Proven track record of fixing and resolvisophisticatedlex configuration issues, including calculation logic and system behavior
- Hands-on experience developing Workday reports and calculated fields used in production environments
- Experience working across multiple Workday domains and understanding cross-domain dependencies
- Ability to guide and mentor other analysts in solution design and delivery
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with payroll processes and downstream integrations related to absence
- Experience with Workday Security configuration
- Exposure to integrations (e.g., EIB, Core Connectors)
- Experience contributing to platform architecture, standards, or governance frameworks
- Experience working in global, matrixed enterprise environments
